The issue is the alert will only vibrate twice or the sound will only sound once for a second or two. Is there a way to make it sound/vibrate longer? Or, is it possible to make the calendar event/appointment vibrate/alert until the user manually stops it like an alarm?

Go to settings> notifications go down to calendar then pick upcoming events etc.
you can now change the sound and make it a persistent notification.
Correct, but you can change the sound to make it go on a bit more too.

Okay, so I just upgraded to iOS 11 and selected persistent but it's still not working. The alert still only vibrate once and there is no audio. Perhaps I have my phone mute but I believed that would still means it should vibrate more than just once, correct?
Where do I find the "persistent" notification option this screen?

Okay, so since my iOS version is not 11, I need to click on "Alerts" (the far right phone icon) and set the persistent in there, correct?
It does not seem to work. The "persistent" is only persistent on the screen. The audio and vibration is not persistent. It only makes a one second sound/vibrate and that's it. Any other suggestions?
I do not see Mail under "Settings".
Not sure about the vibration, don’t think that is something you can change. But you can change the sound. This could make it more like a text or an al
