Not able to add Tones using the new Itunes Software to My Iphone

Hi All,

I have the latest version of Itunes 12.7. I tried to create tones with the songs I liked. So created a tone and converted to AAC version. Post that when i tried to add the Tone to my Iphone I was not able to do it.

Instead what happened was all the songs in my phone were erased and left with no songs in my phone. Did anybody had this issue ?

Is there a way to create a tone and load into Iphone and use as a ringtone ? My phone model is Iphone 6S+.

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 11, null

I have the same issue where the drag and drop feature does not work for me, at least not with iTunes for Windows 12.7 on Windows 10. Instead of the screenshot shown in that support article, my mouse cursor becomes a circle with a cross-out. This is when I try to manually drag and drop a previously synced ringtone from the My Music\Tones folder on my PC.

@turingtest2, did you have any success manually adding custom ringtones from Windows 10 (from the \My Music\Tones folder) to your device, as the support article suggests? Here is the image from that support article for ringtone transfer:

However as mentioned previously, this does not work in Windows! Instead, this is what my iTunes shows:

As you can see, instead of showing the ringtone .m4r file, I only see a circle icon with a cross-out through it. My custom ringtones still exist in my iPad Mini 4 (also on iOS 11), but there is no way to transfer them from that device to my PC or my iPhone:

Since there is no longer a way to 'sync' tones to a device in version 12.7, you'll need to drag and drop it to the device. It's covered in this doc - Use tones on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

But as others have discovered, once it's on a device, there's no way to remove it.

See Create and manage ringtones in iTunes.

FWIW app, book, and tone management features have been removed from iTunes 12.7. See Changes in the new iTunes - Apple Support for details. The intention is clearly that app updates and purchases are now managed on the device.

For what remains see the Manually add items from your computer section of Manually manage content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes - Apple Support. This can be used to copy apps, books, and tones from your computer to your device. The File Sharing feature for copying data between apps and the computer is still there.

Here is the answer:

Basically, you cant drag and drop ringtones now you have to copy and paste them.

Is anyone else wondering whats going on at Apple since Steve died?

If you want to do it the proper way you have to use an old version without this "feature" (bug)

You can get that here:

Deploy apps in a business environment with iTunes - Apple Support

I find it frustrating that every time Apple adds a new feature it costs me a % of my life.

I am having the same problem on Windows 8.1

I have an iPad Mini 1 and an iPhone 4S both on iOS 9.3.5 and iPhone SE and iPad 2017 both on iOS 10.3.3. I recently made the mistake of updating iTunes to 12.7 (from 12.6). I am using Windows 8.1. I would like to wait a while before upgrading the 10.3.3 devices to iOS 11 (after the bugs have been ironed out).

I now have a problem with regard to updating / syncing all my devices with regard to Ringtones. It seems that you have to be running iOS 11 on a device so that the new iTunes is able to support drag and drop. So - how do I now add/remove ringtones.

I have tried the methods of drag/drop outlined by Turingtest etc. but none of them work in my environment. Am I missing something (highly likely) or is it just not possible ?

I know it should, but it doesn't. I cannot create a ringtone because it already IS a ringtone downloaded from Zedge to my PC. When I try to drag it to my device in iTunes I get the circle with a bar thru it. Prior to 12.7 I could just put it into iTunes and sync it - but not any more.

Funnily enough I downloaded a ringtone from Zedge earlier (all my own ringtones were already on my device) but it arrived as an mp3 that I had to convert first. Is your file in AAC format with a .m4r fie extension?

Oh, odd that being in admin mode would block the action rather than enable it? 😕😮

I seem to have fixed it.

I was running iTunes in Administrator Mode. As soon as I took that off it works.

OMG you are correct! In Windows 10, I ran iTunes in normal mode, and now I can transfer my custom ringtones over to my iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 11! I previously had it running in Administrator Mode, because an older version of iTunes could not recognize my devices unless it was in Admin. Such a buggy piece of software!

I had this same issue on my PC running Windows 10, but I found a solution to the problem. I opened the iTunes on my wife's Mac, went to settings and turned off automatic syncing. I plugged my phone in and my device appeared on ITunes.

I then used GoToMyPC to get the ringtone files from my PC. They will be copied into the Downloads Folder on the Mac. From the Downloads Folder I successfully dragged the files into the "My Device" on ITunes, And It Worked Perfectly.

I now once again have the ringtones that I have used for over ten years (originally on my Blackberry).

I’m not a computer tech but I’m not silly either. I have been syncing ringtones since this started. All was going fine until the new update. I’m running windows 10 and have an iPhone 7 with latest software so I’m guessing that’s iOS 11.2. Now I can’t put ANY ringtone through iTunes no matter what I do. I’ve tried through admin mode....this doesn’t work. I’ve tried normal mode...this didn’t work either. I cannot drag and drop the ringtones either. All I get is a circle with a line through it and it doesn’t matter if it’s mp3, mp4, or m4r. Just won’t go into the “tones” section under “on my device” in iTunes. All my ringtones are 30 secs and under. If anyone can help, I will gladly take it......pretty please.
