Keynote slide numbers "x"

I'm having an issue with Keynote slide numbers. I insert them on the master slides where they appear as an "X." And when I look at the slides in editing mode, the actual slide number is shown (e.g., "45"). But when I Play the presentation, the numbers present as "x."

I'm using Keynote 7.3 (5046). My coworker is using version 7.2 and when he views the same presentation, the numbers appear correctly.

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, were you able to fix it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Same behavior here- page numbers turn into x's in pdf's and when playing the Keynote. The workaround I have found is selecting "Define as Text Placeholder" for the page-count object in the Master Slides. By checking that box in all Master Slides, page numbers appear again.

Unfortunately, I have hundreds of Keynotes that now need to be modified to stop X's from appearing. An explanation as to why this is now necessary is beyond me.
