gmail app not clearing badge in iOS 11

While we wait for the app to be updated by Google I have found the below actions will reset the badge.

1. In the upper left slide out menu you will see your email address listed. Select the down arrow.

2. In the set of options select “manage accounts”

3. Your email will be listed with a slider for off and on.

4. Slide the account off. Do not worry you will not be signed out.

5. Slide the account back on.

6. Your email badge count will be reset as the app will be forced to reread your email count.

It is a long list of steps but it takes only about 2 or three seconds to complete after you know where to look.

When you tap Manage Accounts and then tap the green slider to deselect your email account, you have to then hit done. Then hit sign in and re-enable the account. That’ll clear the false notifications for a while but they’ll inevitably come back. I think gmail has to update their app. I just keep checking for app updates.

I to have had the same issue, I went into settings, gmail, and turned off the Siri option, and just like that my issue was solved!

1. Tap and hold the app until it jiggles.
2. Tap the on the app.
   
3. Press the Home button.
4. Go to the App Store and download the app again.
5. Wait for the app to download, then open it from the Home screen.

It’s not a complete fix but get the 11.1 beta 2 and the notifications should clear 95% of the time. Until a real fix is released. Also, I’m guessing apple and google aren’t seeing this forum at all :/

It's a google problem. And yes, Apple does not read or respond in this user-to-user forum. And Google certainly doesn't. But Google has their own support forums.

Since Apple has changed how app badge icons are updated, the only thing that will fix the issue is an update from Google. Judging by how many people are having this issue, google seems to be rather slow to release a fix. They had to know this was a problem with the developer release of iOS 11. So, either Apple really screwed the developers on this update, or Google is just plain lazy.

This works, but only if you select Done in between sliding the account off and then on again.

I'm having the same problem. If I sign out of the GMail app and then sign back in that temporarily fixes this. Or I can reboot the phone but eventually the unread notification comes back and won't clear after having no actual unread emails.

Actually the 11.1 beta seems to have it mostly fixed. Occasionally it shows false notifications but very rarely. At least for me.

How has this problem not been resolved yet, Apple? There have been three update to iOS 11, now, including the original release. There is no fix for this other than the temporary ones that people have mentioned. I am tired of having to sign in and out of the Gmail mail app just to clear the message badge.

It looks like the iOS 11.1 beta 2 may fix this issue. Hopefully that’ll be released as a normal iOS update soon and be a permanent fix.

Having the same problem. Super annoying. Have tried turning notifications on/off. No luck. Seems to reset itself when new mail comes in, but then shows the number of new messages after those are read.

Ugh. Disappointing, I loved the Gmail app. Might go back to Mail or another app.

I have had the same issue. I updated my iOS and got the new iPhone 8 and then this issue began.

It is VERY annoying to see, and nothing seems to fix it. I am hoping that gmail and/or iPhone comes out with an update soon to fix this issue.
