GMC/IPhone 8 wireless charging

I had the same problem and unfortunately, it won't work on anything older than 2018 models.

Per Apple's website: "The implementations of wireless charging in 2017 and earlier models from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC do not meet the requirements for Qi certification. These models do not work with iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus."

you can purchase a 2018 charging coil and swap it out with your old one mounted in the armrest lid and it will function perfectly (I have done it). Of course, they changed the plug used with the new coils so you have to pull the wires and replace the old harness with an new one as well.

Hey guys, I ran into this issue as well and have had the whole run around from Apple to gmc then back to Apple. The issue goes straight back to Apple and it not being programmed to be compatible. I have been working with Apples customer support on trying to get this issue resolved and they sent the problem into the dev team so hopefully we should be seeing an update to fix this issue! In the mean time I went to Walmart and bought a $15 wireless charging case and snapped it on and it worked great. Not an ideal solution but it’ll work till they get this problem resolved! So according to the replies I’m seeing, it looks like before 2018 models, GMC was not using Qi certified wireless charging pads in the the vehicles. So I wonder if you can replace the one in a 2016 with the new 2018 considering I do not believe any physical dimensio changes were made to the center consent armrest where mine is located?

I ordered both a cheap desktop Qi charger and a generic Qi receiver to try and narrow down the problem. When attaching the receiver to an iPhone 7 Plus, it charges on both the desktop and vehicle charger. When I try with an iPhone 8, the desktop charger works, but the vehicle charger does not. If I put a case on the iPhone 7 Plus with the Qi receiver inside the case, the vehicle charger no longer works. So it seems GM designed this thing with insufficient power to get through either the Apple silicone case or the iPhone 8 glass back. I will try it with an iPhone X once I receive it, but I imagine the results will be the same.

I'd be curious to hear what they say. I've been digging around in some forums and apparently someone found that GM uses a 'single coil' setup in the charging pad which works with some devices and cases, but not all. Sounded like it was a good idea, cheaply implemented. It would be nice if they offered some upgrade kit. Hopefully the dealer has different news.

In november we had our 1500 Denali in for service and we had a loaner that was a 2018 Denali. The iPhone X charged perfect on that wireless charging doc.

We got our 2016 Denali back and we’re Having problems with the X charging even with the same wireless charging case as previously used in the ‘18 Denali.

I was thinking the same thing. I would hope they would offer an upgrade kit of some kind. It's kind of amazing that they went through the trouble of specifically creating a charging mat for phones and used sub-standard non-compliant materials for 3 model years.

Same issue for me on a 2016 Yukon. Also tried my phone on a 2015 Tahoe, same result, no charging.

I am having the same issue. I have tried it with 2 iPhones 8’s in a 2106 Yukon XL and a 2017 Sierra. No worky. Note that I have charged S8 in both vehicles so the pad is on and working.

Waited a year for the wireless iphone. Returned my iphone 8 Monday Since its incompatable.

I Could buy a wireless charger, but it would use the lightning port which you now need for headphones so cant use headphones and a charger accessory. Too much trouble Apple! Looking into Android for first time. Super dissapointing

That is excellent information. It is unfortunate. Are the 2018 vehicles even out yet? Maybe just arriving. I have a 2017 Yukon Denali and the IP8 did not work. The last paragraph made me laugh, before purchasing a new vehicle, make sure it is comparable with the IP8. Yah, I am going purchase a vehicle around a phone. How about when I purchase a phone, I will make sure it is compatible with my vehicle. Looking at other brands for the first time since IP5. Never been a big Apple fan, but the IP was always outstanding...
