Can't sign into hotmail Error 1005

I can no longer access any web pages that require me to sign in. Hotmail, banks, ebay, music download sites all take forever to partially load then I get a message saying “lost network connection” Error 1005. I haven't changed anything and have tried most of the suggestions posted in other pages. I called my ISP and they said there is no problem at their end, my modem works fine but they offer no support for macs : (

I am tearing my hair out as I don't know what else to try. I have a new Intel PowerBook which also has the same problem in my house but no problem when using Airport to connect anywhere else or at my work which is only two blocks away and the same ISP.

Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sorry to take so long to reply but I can't even acces the Apple pages properly in my house.

My Mac Mini in my house is connected via the ethernet connection to my modem, I don't have Airport in my house. When my laptop is connected via the ethernet to my modem it has the same problems, but works fine out of my house wirelessly or connected to a modem.

My ISP says that there is no problem with connection or modem but they offer no Mac support so they can't advise on whether any of my other settings are wrong.

A thought from reading a different thread.

Maybe corrupt cookies. How that would happen simultaneously on 2 puters is a puzzle.

Safari > Preferences > Security > Show Cookies.

Delete Hotmail Cookies. You will then need, at Hotmail, to enter ID and password.

If that works for Hotmail, then maybe it will also at other sites.

More coffee may be helping. Try in a different account on your computer.

System Preferences > Accounts. Make ➕ a "test" account. Log in thru it and see if the problem persists. Again the 2 puter problem suggests these are pretty wild stabs.

Thanks, but I've already tried Deleting Cookies, setting up a "test" account and many other ideas I've noted from other threads but to no avail.

I find it incredibly strange that it affects whatever computer is connected to the modem. It seems to me like it must be an ISP issue but they are positive it isn't. Why though should it only affect certain sites????

There are not a lot of answers concerning Error 1005 around on other threads either.

Thanks for trying to help me, much appreciated.

I am aware of that the laptop was OKed elsewhere which pretty much ruled out a computer and hence my reluctant suggest re Safari. That's why it's such a puzzle.

I gave up on modem cuz it worked to non logon locations.

I was trying to learn something. Far be it from me to be argumentative.

IDEA. New modem location maybe using DNS 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 etc.

jp, my friend --
I know, we're both trying to learn things here everyday.
You were certainly not being argumentative.

I seem to remember in my now ancient mind,
a case where the same problem with logins to sites was happening
and a firmware update did the trick. But of course, I may be mistaken.
Not the first time, LOL. My apologies if I came across short.
I was glad to see your response, and was just trying to quickly jot something back.
