Last night I restarted my phone and it asked for my passcode, for some reason it said the passcode was invalid. I proceeded to retry and after about three tries the phone said it is locked for one minute... without touching any of the keys, the phone went into factory reset mode all on its own. I then tried to restore backup my phone and it repeatedly said this, “iTunes could not restore the iPhone because an error occurred while reading from or writing to the iPhone.” I am using the phone from a backup that was done back in 2016 — I also have the latest version of iTunes and iOS, not sure why this is happening??? So I do not have anymore my latest apps nor important info that I need now for my job! Yes, please help and assist at Apple specialist’s earliest convenience!!

i actually just figured it out about 30 minutes ago.

When i tried to restore the phone originally yesterday, my computer hard drive had about 60 free gigs on it (i have a smallish SSD on there, and usually when it gets that low from movies/TV shows whatever, I manually move it to a network drive). Well, apparently when you try to restore, iTunes creates a massive folder in AppData\Apple\MobileSync\Backups and basically my SSD was running out of memory to do the sync. I noticed this becuase I tried to download a new IPSW and it said my hard drive was totally full!

I deleted all the folders that had been generated in my previous Restore attempts (about 7 or 8 folders) and that cleared up about 60+ gigs. Then I deleted a few other things and the Restore finally went through.

Really strange that doing a restore would generate such huge files. Im guessing it creates some kind of temporary folder structure containing all the files it wants to copy to the phone, and then deletes it when its done. but since my restore was never finishing, it never deleted them. And the first time I tried restoring last night, Windows decide it would do an update and cut off the Restore in progress, and the first huge folder was created. which then took up a ton of space so i couldnt do subsequent restores.

So anyways, if you get this error message, your hard drive is too full to do the restore so delete some stuff.

I am also having a problem with backing up Apple devices.

I have tried all listed options here, and elsewhere

I have seen bvacking up errors on multiple systems and devices, but not able to fix the unknown problem.

The most common, and non-descriptive, errors I see are:

"iTunes could not backup the iPad because an error has occurred."

"iTunes could not restore the iphone because an error occured while reading from or writing to the iphone."

Currenly I am not able to use my Apple device for its intended purpose.

It would make life so much easier if the error can break down further the reasons, so people can have some hope in being able to fix this problem, whatever it is.

I have seen this error in a number of cases, with a few friends, over the last month, and not been able to fix it on their systems either.
