So Safari 11 broke iCloud tab syncing

So, in typical Apple fashion, the brand new Safari 11.0 for macOS Sierra 10.12.6 completely broke iCloud tab syncing. Our other devices (iPhone and iPad running iOS 10.3.3) can no longer see our open tabs from our Mac. Our Mac can still see our open tabs from the iPhone and the iPad, but our iPhone and iPad can no longer see our open tabs from our Mac. This was working perfectly fine in Safari 10.x for macOS Sierra, but as soon as the Safari 11.0 update came along, this functionality was completely broken by Apple.

Mine work. Try going Safari/View/Customize Toolbar and add the iCloud tabs.

Try Settings/Your Name/iCloud and slide off syncing. Wait a few minutes and then resync. This will start the sync from the beginning.

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing.

Last resort - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?

Thanks for reporting this to Apple. I suppose there is a vague chance something might eventually happen. I have exactly this issue:

iMac and MacBook Air both on Sierra - no tabs shared between them.

But both show my iPad (OS10) and iPhone (OS11).

No tabs from iMac/Air appear on iPad/Phone.

It's bizarre, because the history and bookmarks sync perfectly between all four.

Frustrating!

I have the exakt same problem. My iOS 11 devices sync their tabs to each other. The tabs from my MacBook Pro with macOS 10.11.6 and Safari 11 are on my iOS devices too. But no tabs from iOS 11 in Safari 11 on the Mac since I updated to Safari 11. Unfortunately I also updated my iOS devices at nearly the same time to iOS 11.

First I blamed Safari 11, but then I tested an iPhone 4S with iOS 9.5.3, and it showed up on all my devices including the Mac with Safari 11.

For another test I updated my wifes's MacBook to Safari 11 on El Capitan. The result was that her iPad with iOS 10.3.3 and her iPhone 4S with iOS 9.5.3 show tabs on her Mac and the Mac tabs are on her iOS devices.

Now I think iOS 11 is the culprit!

Yes I confirm that iOS 11 does not sync tabs with Safari 11 on macOS El Capitan.

I think I have die Answer now.

Among all the things I have done ( found in this thread) - on the older iOS (9.x.x) I have turned Safari sync with iCloud off, but selected to retain the local data. This seems to have spoiled the Magic. After turning the Safari sync back on - nothing changed.

Yesterday I summoned all my courage and choose to remove the data. Ended up with empty Bookmarks Bar in a blank Safari. Couple of minutes later ( could have been an hour) went back to iCloud Settings and turned the Safari Syncronisation back on selecting to merge the local and cloud Data.

The Bookmarks synchronized back almost instantly, so, relieved I did not bother checking the rest.

Now, when I check on my iOS 11 iPhone I can confirm, that the iPad’s Safari tabs are listed right after the High Sierra MacBooks tabs.

Playing around confirmed, that they sync instantly.

So this should be it. It works now

Kosta,

the problem is the old devices that cannot be updated do not communicate with ios11. iOS 11 will sync all data from the old devices.

One tech told me to sign out of iCloud. I lost all my photo stream photos in the devices I turned off my iCloud & signed back in. Only my iPhone retained them because I did not turn off iCloud.

after about 15 different SENIOR APPLECARE techs, one of them looked it up in their tech manual.

The only way your devices will synchronize if all are on the same ios11.

Conclusion:

Apple wants us to trade in our old devices!!

Yes, this is my conclusion too. Designed obsolescence.

This one is a dumb move on Apple's part. The strongest reason for staying with Apple is their multi-device ecosystem. It makes it hard to change to non-Apple products. However, in this case, Apple is breaking their own ecosystem. Guess what? Chrome and Firefox will still sync tabs across all of my devices. Bye-bye Safari.

Apple just gave up one of the pillars of its ecosystem in my house. My dependency on Apple just got weaker.

P.S. Apple - getting rid of 'disable cache' in the developer menu and replacing it with a manual 'empty caches' command in the latest version of safari was also dumb. What value do you get from making developers lives' harder?

So Safari 11 broke iCloud tab syncing
