AppleTV Gen 3 - no optical audio

My ATV gen 3 is attached to the monitor via HDMI and to external speakers via the optical TOSlink output (I use an optical to 3.5mm jack converter).

However, I am getting no audio from the optical output. I get audio just fine from the HDMI output (I understand there is no way to turn this off so I just mute it).

Question: do I need to tell the AppleTV to direct the audio output to the optical instead of HDMI?

I can't find a way of doing this in the setup menus.

Help!

Thanks.

That adapter looks like it's to attach a mini toslink (3.5mm size) cable to a device requiring standard toslink cables - one adapter at each end.

As WC says this adapter will not do D to A conversion if your ext speakers are analogue only.

You may find the monitor has a 3.5mm audio out which could be used to send the audio the monitor processes to the speakers.
