I want to remove a "malwarebytes" icon from the top menu bar.

I can't remove the icon from my top menu bar. 😠

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), I would appreciate suggestions

Have you quit MalwareBytes? If so, then open Activity Monitor in the Utilities' folder. Scroll through the process names to see if there is a process with Malware.... in the name. If so you can select it and click on the Quit button to quit the process. This should remove the menubar item. If MalwareBytes includes an uninstall option or utility then you should use it to remove MalwareBytes.

I had and solved this same problem...

The problem stemmed from the fact that I deleted Malwarebytes from my Macbook by moving it from the Applications folder to the Trash, and then emptying the Trash. But this left the icon at the top, and not even restarting the Macbook twice would remove the icon.

What solved the problem was re-downloading the installation package from Malwarebytes as you see others describing on this page (i.e., following the instructions at How-To: Uninstall Malwarebytes for Mac). This installation package also contains the uninstaller ("Remove Malwarebytes.pkg"). I ran the uninstaller, and the icon was immediately gone from the menu bar.

Good luck.

Are you trying to remove Malwarebytes, or just get rid of the icon in the menu bar?

If the latter, open the Malwarebytes app and go to Settings (or choose Settings from the menu bar icon). There's a preference there to hide that icon.

If you're trying to remove it, you need the uninstaller, which is on the disk image containing the installer. If you don't have that disk image anymore, go to the Malwarebytes site and re-download it.

This won't work. The Malwarebytes app is not responsible for the icon, as it's entirely normal for the icon to be present when the Malwarebytes app is not running.

If you quit the process responsible for the menu icon, it'll just re-open. That process is meant to stay running.

See my post for the correct procedures for either turning off the icon or uninstalling the software, depending on which is desired.
