iPhone 8 GPS problems

Great and detailed info, but a lot of people in this thread experience the same issues while walking. Bottom line I think is, my X had a greatly diminished quality of gps compared to every other phone I ever owned.

Maybe I could get it to work in some situations, and maybe I couldn't, but for $1200 why should I have t work at it?

I just returned mine and bough a Pixel 2, which has a regular gps (meaning it works everywhere).

I may have got my money back from Apple, but I'm still ****** at all the time I wasted.

I just sent Apple support this other thread about GPS problems started by someone with an iPhone 6 and a 5s.

I hear you, samfromhampstead. I am on my 2nd 8 Plus. I never have issues when moving, mine is more when I am at home it always shows me 500-800 feet away. I have a 1st gen iPad & iPhone4 and I used Maps on both and they show the exact same inaccurate GPS location. It sounds like a fundamental GPS problem w/ Apple's satellites.

And Apple EVERYTIME will deny ever hearing a problem. Every single problem they hear is the first time it's been reported. Such horsesh*t. They are trained to always play dumb with issues.

Another interesting thing that I've found.

It appears that my iPhone X which has these serious GPS issues also has a weaker reception for 4G signal.

I tested it twice on the same spot with the same network (EE in the UK) next to my iPhone 6S Plus. The 6S Plus was able to open pages, load videos on YouTube, whereas the iPhone X next to it could not even open a page.

I noticed that 2 weeks ago at the same spot but thought something went wrong with the iPhone X and it was just coincidence. I visited the same spot today. Apparently, that spot has a weak 4G reception. However, iPhone 6S could work just fine where the X was unable to use the internet at all.

I am just thinking... Coincidence? Are the antennas defective? Is it the glass back that prevents the antennas working to their full capacity? I am not impressed to say the least. Hope the replacement will fix this once and for all.

Back from the Apple Store. The Genius said: "Ah but you only did a full reset from your phone, you need to do it via iTunes so that a completely new iOS11 is installed instead of updates over updates." They did it for me and the result: nothing, back to square one.

Solution given by Apple ? Either pay 350 EUR to get a new iPhone 6 or get a small reduction on a new model.

Just thought I'd provide an update.

I had my iPhone X replaced by Apple.

The new phone I received is a bit better. The GPS dot does not jump like crazy or going around in circles like with the previous device.

However, it is still seriously laggy. When driving it's very easy to miss a turn and it shows you a few meters behind. If you take a turn it still shows you like you're going forward and then abruptly jumps to where you are supposed to be.

At this point I can only wait for a software update. If it's not fixed I am going to replace this with a Pixel 2 unfortunately. Too bad because it will be a huge inconvenience as my entire ecosystem is Apple.

The GPS issue is also on iPhone 6, so nothing to do with the new models. Unless the new Galileo compatibility is handled by software and not by hardware. In that case maybe iOS11 activated Galileo support to all iPhones which, if not handled well could explain interferences and why the problem seems to be related to iOS11

Yes, they could have added some new software features to iOS11 to leverage the new hardware in the new phones, and in the process messed up not only GPS functions on the new phones but also on the legacy ones. Making new software for new phones that negatively affects the old ones isn't unheard of 😉

I have an Iphone 6s and have been researching this exact same issue for a few months now. The issue came on immediately after upgrading to ios 11.2.1 and after restarting the phone, no more gps.

I have followed all the various instructions, none of which made any difference. I have taken it to the Apple store, they told me to upgrade the phone to the latest version. I have done a complete wipe and factory reset. to be honest, there isn't anything I haven't tried. The process of elimination is exhausted. I may be cynical but I am convinced it is a 'glytch' in the software. Is it intended to make me/us buy the new phone, don't know, that is just speculation.

Anyway, I am about to throw my IPhone in the draw and buy an Oppo R11s android.

Decided to try the GPS diagnostics app on my iPhone X, my old 5S and wife’s 6S.

The signal on the 5S is the strongest by far, often near the maximum. The X signal never matches that on the 5S, it’s generally about 25/30% weaker. To my surprise the 6S also was poor, sometimes the same as the X and sometimes lower but never higher.

I also bought the GPS diagnostics app (the dev must be wondering why so many people are buying it lately ;-) )

On my iPhone 8+ (iOS 11.2.5) and while afoot I get an accuracy of +- 6m. Satellite quality is around 80%.

Although pretty accurate I still see Apple / Google Maps, Mountainbike Pro, Ingress and other location based apps lagging behind or being totally wrong (to a point where Apple Maps would tell me to take a turn while I should have taken the turn 100m ago or Google Maps keeps telling me that the route is being recalculated)

The GPS diagnostic apps shows me that my position is updated every second via GPS but maybe the app is doing something differently here than iOS giving its location data to the apps?

Same location, app and settings. I haven’t tested the batteries however the 5S is my old workhorse which I hammered for 4 years before getting the X so the battery is likely degraded. So it doesn’t seem like battery health is a factor in my case.

Also I noticed that when stationary the X sometimes shows me at 1mph whereas the 5S shows stationary. That may explain why the blue dot drifts on my X but much less so on the 5S.

Yesterday I found something weird.

Like all of you, I'm having the same problem in my iPhone 7. Nothing worked, restore as a new, toggle off/on...

But yesterday I could make a trip with 3 different GPS devices: my iPhone 7, GPS integrated of my car, and a Tomtom.

Any of them worked, and only the iPhone could ubicate me at the begginning, just because of wifi signal or 4G.

I was driving with all 3 devices on. And the weird thing is that, suddenly, all 3 started to work like they should do, at the exact same time.

I still can think that the problem was iOS 11 (at least on my iPhone), because the problems started with that version, and I can't assume that the problem is in the car, because the iPhone 6s of my gf works perfectly in the car (and in that moment, my iPhone and the GPS of the car didn't work -I didn't have the Tomtom in this new test-).

Nothing has changed on the car, no new window glass... and this is really weird. I'll try to test more things this weekend, like the same test of 3 devices in another different car.

Okay, I've been struggeling with the GPS of my iPhone 8+ since I got it in December. I've tried everything. Eventually I contacted support and the way they treated it got my spirits up a little. I've sent them videos of the GPS diagnostic app open on two devices, on which the problem of the inaccurate GPS of the iPhone 8+ became really clear.

They contacted me and stated that I had to reset my phone. They also wanted me to go to three seperate locations and perform tests. I did all of it, twice. (I had to write down time and date, because apparently they can't extract that from meta data, whatever.)

After some time I finally got reply that the device was faulty and I should have it repaired. (Really? What are you going to repair on a brand new iPhone 8+... But again, whatever).

Sent it to get it fixed. Just now got a reply that it is on its way back to me. They couldn't reproduce the issue, so it isn't being fixed.

I've had it. I'm done. This is just ridiculous. All of the effort of re-configuring after restoring backups, creating videos. It's just to keep you busy and wear you down. The iPhone 8/8+ and X have issues with GPS. I think it's because of changes to allow wireless charging and they can't cover their own *****.

11.2.6 makes no difference. After all this time I didn’t expect it to, I’m pretty sure there is a fundamental hardware issue.
