iPhone 8 GPS problems

On both Google Maps and Apple Maps, the gps doesn't seem to keep up. The apps start up fine but once I start driving the GPS becomes erratic and loses me. Both navigation apps can't seem to locate me unless I re-start the app over and over again. I thought it was a buggy iPhone 8 so I took it back to Verizon (where I bought it) and it was swapped out for a new one, and the new one started acting the same way the moment I hit the road. I haven't used any icloud backups, I set up both phones as new iPhones each time I activated them. I also factory reset my day old iPhone twice before taking it to the store for replacement. The replacement (new) phone has the same issue. Help!

On the iPhone X, my issue was (TTFF) time to first fix i.e. getting the initial GPS-based location. Once I got that, the locations were always accurate, if I started my journey without waiting for that, I had problems.

TTFF seems much better now probably because I did the following:

SIM trick (see previous postings and warnings about removing/reinserting SIM cards while phone on)

Set Compass to True North

upgraded to iOS 12.0.1

turned off all GPS apps apart from the one I am using

turned off all other unnecessary background apps

stood motionless in clear view of sky until I got GPS-based (not Wifi/Cellular-only) location. to be absolutely sure of this, I use Motion X and look for the blue/green globe to spin, and sometimes also use GPS Diagnostic.

All of these may have helped, particularly the first, third, and last steps.

Even after all that, TTFF is still slower than on my wife's iPhone 6S which uses the same carrier and same iOS.

Anyway, apart from looking like an idiot standing on the spot outside for 10 to 30 seconds to get the first fix, I have no problems at the moment.

I’m not sure if anyone has already tried or if this is the correct forum to post this (as I’ve read too many forums for this gps issue and I’ve lost track). But I thought I would let folks know a solution I found for my gps issue.

As some have mentioned, my gps doesn’t update frequently enough to be accurate on Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps when my phone is on the center of the dash. So I put a 1.5”x1” aluminum foil on the top left corner (screen facing you and length of foil horizontal) where the gps chip supposedly is. Voila. It’s been working for 3 whole days now! MacGyver saved me from months of frustration.

Excuse my rant: they don’t make iPhones like they used to.
