iPhone 8 GPS problems

On both Google Maps and Apple Maps, the gps doesn't seem to keep up. The apps start up fine but once I start driving the GPS becomes erratic and loses me. Both navigation apps can't seem to locate me unless I re-start the app over and over again. I thought it was a buggy iPhone 8 so I took it back to Verizon (where I bought it) and it was swapped out for a new one, and the new one started acting the same way the moment I hit the road. I haven't used any icloud backups, I set up both phones as new iPhones each time I activated them. I also factory reset my day old iPhone twice before taking it to the store for replacement. The replacement (new) phone has the same issue. Help!

iPhone 8, iOS 11

Just went out a few miles drive to test the replacement phone. Drove over a mile with the phone not on the magnetic mount and it worked perfectly on waze and apple maps. On the way back i put it on the magnetic mount and low and behold waze had red No GPS error and apple maps location was way off and wouldnt right itself. I dont think new phones are supposed to be bothered my magnets but thats seems to be the case for me. I know that some people on this thread have it happening when walking or on a non magnetic mount and i hope you find a solution but for others out there using these mounts, try taking it off. Im gonna buy a cradle mount, too much hassle to get phone replaced so User uploaded fileim taking the easy option.

Hi,

I had similar issues with the iPhone GPS and now it's a 5th day that this finally works (I'm travelling a lot and using different maps all the time).

this is what I did:

- turn off location services: settings - privacy - location services (wait 20 seconds),

- turn location services on again

- turn off bluetooth: settings - bluetooth (wait 20 seconds)

- turn bluetooth on again

- go to settings - mobile data - mobile data options - enable 4G - select 'off' - go back - go to enable 4G again - select 'voice&data', go back to settings

- go to settings - general - reset - reset Network settings

I hope this will help you too.

I'm having the same problem and to be honest feel a little ripped off. It's not like it's the first iPhone and they haven't had time to address these issues. My gps lags and is always behind, I've tried everything and nothing works. When I phoned apple, the person I talked to seemed to act surprised that this was happening. Reading on how many people are having the same problem, I'm hoping they address the issue soon.

I have the exact same problem with the iPhone X.

I compare it to an iPhone 6s and the 6s is fine.

I doubt it has anything to do with specific models of cars.

I notice the problem more in built up areas, as if the iPhone 8 and x have a less sensitive gps.

intersting Rob - how are you getting on with your support ticket? i called Apple support and they tried to suggest it was a Software issue, but they weren’t very helpful.

im going to try taking the iPhone X into an Apple store - hopefully It’s a quality issue with early models, as whilst Many of us have this problem, its not a front page issue on tech sites.

incredibly frustrating though and puts me off going bleeding edge with brand new apple hardware.

It’s the silence from Apple that has been the most frustrating thing.

I’d be happy to wait if they acknowledged the issue.

I guess I won’t leave Apple yet; I’m stuck with the iPhone X. But I will think twice about upgrading and staying in the eco system. Especially with the MacBook pro’s no longer being ‘pro’.

I get the impression that the iPhone X was rushed out; and its version of iOS 11 with it.

WI-FI is on. Bluetooth is on. All location services are enabled on all apps; and on all system services.

The problem with the gps happens on apple maps, google maps and all other gps/mapping apps.

The blue gps location floats around between roads, this happens even when stationary.

Well I’ve had enough.

Booked an appointment with Apple store in Covent Garden, London on Monday.

Interesting that one of the topics you can choose is ‘my iphones internal gps is not working as expected’.

I will mention this thread.

Went to Apple store in Covent Garden with my IPhone X experiencing the GPS issue.

The Genius told me it was a known issue which has been escalated to the US, they took my serial number and told me a replacement phone would not solve the problem.

They are looking to resolve the issue with a software patch, and I was told to wait.

I spoke to them before doing this and they told em to take the phone in.

The store then told me they knew of the issue.

Do I need to insist the apple support person escalates the case, or demand to speak to an engineer?

Most of the first line support seem unhelpful.

Apple have asked me to install a profile to my iPhone X and help them gather test data, by driving around and then extraction a log file to submit to them.

I’m happy to do this; but I hope at some point I can get a phone with a working gps; I rely on it for navigation.

In hindsight I shouldn’t have bought the iPhone X as soon as it was released; I should’ve waited six months. But I didn’t anticipate the gps to be so degraded.

I’m being asked to install a profile on my iPhone X and provide some logs.

They are listening, but it seems as if it doesn’t affect all iPhone x’s as there are millions of owners who presumably use them for satnavs and haven’t complained.

Maybe it’s a subset of models?
