Apple Notes keeps crashing in iOS11

Hope you can help me, I appreciate your input and suggestions. FYI... I usually upgrade my iPhone every two years and upgrade to the most advanced Apple device that Apple offers. I’ve been using my current iPhone 7+ 256gb for almost a year now, with no issues. I have been using Apple Notes for many years with no issues prior to my recent upgrade to iOS11. I just upgraded to iOS 11 the day of the release and have now noticed that Notes is always crashing. I do use Notes quite extensively. After a couple a crashes, I think tried exiting Notes, it often resets itself and then crashes again. I have tried both hard and soft re-boots, but that doesn’t help... Any ideas? Thanks in advance... Rob

My problem seems to be solved. I went back and compared my most recent notes on the iPhone against the same notes in iCloud. Found about 15 that were out of sync (the iPhone version was correct since that is where I edit most of them, thus confirming what I knew before: that my sync problem was originating on the iPhone). I then copied each of the notes that were out of sync emailed them to myself, and copied and pasted them into my Mac notes app. They all synced fine through iCloud and onto my iPhone. I then went back a year to verify there were no problems with other notes. All other notes were in sync. I then turned note off on my iPhone, this deleting them from the device. I lastly turned Notes on in my iPhone. All downloaded from iCloud to my iPhone. I tested the sync process by creating a new note on my iPhone. It IMMEDIATELY synced to both iCloud and my Mac. Problem solved!

Has anyone tried reaching out to websites like 9to5 Mac or others to try to garner some larger audience for this issue. My hope is that if we can get Apples attention through a much larger audience, they might see it and they may even do something about it. Just a thought. I know, I’m fed up with this nonsense and something needs to get done now. Let me know your guys thoughts

I echo your sentiment. Sounds like taking Notes is an essential part of your day. I don’t want to leave Apple Notes, I’m leaving because Apple leaves us with no other alternative. I’m using Evernote for now, but taking some online training on OneNote. OneNote looks much more sophisticated than Apple Notes. I‘m not sure I need all of that, but if OneNote is stable I will move over to OneNote. It appears OneNote works fine on iPad, and it supports iPad Pro and pencil. Good luck with your transition.

I have the exact same issue, and it is very unfortunate that I had to completely stop using the Notes app because of this. It is by far one of the best Notes app I have used, but its insane instability in iOS 11 has forced me to switch to Bear App. Shame on Apple for introducing so many awesome features for Notes in iOS 11, and then completely degrading the quality of the app itself. I am baffled how this buggy of an app passes testing and quality assurance, if there is still something like that at Apple.

I've been having similar problems for about a month now. First it was on an iPhone 6 Plus, now on iPhone X running latest iOS. The Notes app crashes frequently requiring me to reopen it. More importantly, my notes are not syncing with iCloud and my iMac as they should. When I enter or make changes to a note on my iMac, it immediately goes to iCloud and my iPhone. Similarly, when I enter or make changes to a note on iCloud with my browser, it immediately goes to my iPhone and iMac. HOWEVER, when I enter or make changes to a note on my iPhone it DOES NOT immediately go to iCloud and my iMac. It often takes hours to sync over and, even then, there are times when the new or altered note never syncs at all. ANOTHER PROBLEM: the images or photos I insert into notes on my iPhone are clearly visible on that device, but on iCloud the images or pictures show as placeholders only; the full image is not visible, and on my iMac, the same note shows the images as either blank placeholders or with the word "Loading" which runs endlessly. Something is wrong with the sync from iOS!

I’ve been having this issue as well since iOS 11 was released. I have an iPad Pro, iPhone 6S, and now iPhone X. Each update I hope it will be resolved but it still keeps happening. I can’t figure out if it’s iCloud, AT&T, or switching from creating/reading the notes on iPhone to iPad and vice versa. I’ve removed the app the all devices, and reloaded it. I’ve reset the iPhone 6S and reloaded it. I sure wish I could get notes to work smoothly again! Goodness it’s unreliability is frustrating! And it’s always acting up in the worst moments, when I’m in a hurry! Oh dear!

Talk about the worst moments! The day that I decided to leave Notes was when my wife was in the ICU at the hospital in an emergency situation and I needed to jot down things that the doctor's and nurses were saying and doing. Every time that day the app would crash and I would miss vital information. That week I used Google Keep and since then I've moved everything over to Evernote.

Yes, I too have had problems with iOS 11 using Notes on my iPhone X and iPads. I use the table in notes. Data frequently jumps off the intended rows and columns to a jumbled mess then crashes. When I reopen notes, luckily my most recent changes are on the table, but the data is jumbled on different rows and overlapping. I leave it and return later to it working for about 10 mins and then the repeat of jumbled rows and columns then crash. I have less than 100 notes. I am hoping Apple fixes notes soon. I am also an avid notes user and rely on the functionality of it.

Thanks, I appreciate the update. Keep using it and stress testing Notes, how many Notes do you have? Keep us updated, we can always use some optimism within this group and thread. Since iOS 11's release and all updates since that have practically made Notes unusable, I've tried the different iterations of solutions shared in this thread and those suggested by Apple, in some cases, the fix appears solid, then have found that Notes works for a day or two and then it starts crashing again...

Good to hear things are working out for you. Please keep us updated if you have continued success and Notes is stable for you on iOS. This “Notes Issue” community thread is over 90 days old... Most of us have gone through many various “fixes” to have Notes work in the short term and then Notes reverts to its freezing and crashing ways over a short period of time. I’m reluctant to keep trying these fixes until I’m confident Apple has resolved this once and for all... so far they haven't and we are not even certain if they are working on this, Apple hasn't responded to many of our escalations. Due to Notes instability, I’ve stopped using it altogether, it’s been well over a month now. I transitioned to back to Evernote for the short term and duplicating note taking on Microsoft OneNote... I should be 100% OneNote in the coming months. I would prefer to be using Apple Notes, but can’t use it when it continually crashes and freezes and Apple hasn't fixed it... OneNote is stable for the most part, although overkill for what I need it for. Evernote is OK, but not 100% for my needs. 🙏 Thanks

I agree. It’s doesn’t seem phone based (6S vs. X) connectivity based (WiFi vs. Cellular vs. none) Evernote based (I don’t have any Evernote links) or number of notes based (my number hasn’t changed). It’s very much an iOS 10 vs iOS 11 problem, and especially iPhone (my iPads seem to be less quirky). And it’s not even a total fail, everything still works on my iPhone, it just requires incredible amounts of time, 4-5 minutes to be ready for the next tap on the screen, which is, of course, infuriating when I’m in a hurry. My current work around is to switch to iPad when it hangs, but obviously I’m disappointed that after this many iOS 11 releases it still isn’t working! What in the world am I doing wrong and/or are Apple’s QA teams missing to cause this to happen for such a long period of time! My goodness a mystery to the average human who isn’t in that close-kept world!

iOS 11.3

The beta is iOS 11.3.beta 1

From what I’ve researched, the beta is very buggy (as usual, all betas are buggy — that’s the intent — to figure out bugs & report them), so I’d hold off installing a beta till at least 5th or 6th version. At that point Apple is close to signing the final and most bugs are mostly squashed. Also, install betas on secondary devices if you have them b/c if you install a beta on your main device and something doesn’t work b/c of bugs, that’s on you. I am personally holding off till the higher signing betas before installing on my iPad Pro.

My experience is similar and persistent. I only have 1,000 notes but I have many photos and links in hundreds of them. I have an iPhone X running the latest iOS. The biggest problem with the app right now is that it almost always freezes when I either first enter the app, re-enter the app from another once Notes is open, or try to edit a note. The freeze lasts between 1-2 minutes usually. I formerly used Notes heavily for presentation outlines with links to jump to other apps and web content but, because of the freezing, this is impractical now. I just reloaded Evernote after years of not using it. I'll have to switch to Evernote for my presentations until (hopefully) Apple gets their act together. Talk about an app not being enterprise ready! Unbelievable that we pay a premium price for a premium product and then get a sub-standard experience. Sad to see Apple's support of apps to have deteriorated as it has.
