how to upgrade my imac 2014 OS X Yosemite v 10.10.5 to OS that uses a magic mouse 2

how can I upgrade my imac 2014 OS X Yosemite v 10.10.5 to OS to use the magic mouse 2

I bought this refurb in 2015-2016. The mouse I have model A1296 doesn't want to open files & folders now.

Thank you

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), S/N: DCPSD0CLG5W4

The magic mouse 2 requires OS X El Capitan (10.11) or later. Backup your iMac personal data to Time Machine, and/or an alternative (but restorable) backup solution.

Today (Sept 24) you can sign into the Mac App Store and still download macOS Sierra (10.12.6). Once Apple releases macOS High Sierra (10.13) — and I believe that will be Sept 25, then you will only be able to download and install 10.13. See the next paragraph before you leap...

Ordinarily, these updates to the next major operating system are non-destructive to your personal data, but the first paragraph is nothing to ignore. Before you upgrade, ensure that you have no third-party applications, or printer/scanner drivers that are unsupported on Sierra, or High Sierra. If you are using Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, it is untested, and unsupported on High Sierra. You will need Office 2016 for Mac v15.35 or later for High Sierra compatibility. Check Roaring Apps for application compatibility. Some applications/drivers will require re-installation.

I think you can plug your Magic Mouse 2 into your Mac via a USB to Lightning cable, then while connected configure the Bluetooth. Now when you disconnect the USB to Lightning cable, it will work via Bluetooth. You may not have every new feature of the Magic Mouse 2, but it will function via Bluetooth.

I was running a Magic Trackpad 2 on a 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6, using this exact setup method.

Again, just plug in the Magic Mouse 2 while configuring Bluetooth, and of course when you need to recharge the mouse. But the rest of the time it should work via Bluetooth.
