How do you see your Next Backup Size in iOS 11.0?

Instructions (from Apple's site) state to do the following to see your Next Backup Size, a feature we use a lot at our school's tech desk when students have backup problems.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

iOS 10.3 or later:

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. If you use iOS 11, tap Manage Storage > Backup. If you use iOS 10.3, tap iCloud Storage > Manage Storage.
  3. Tap the name of any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that's linked to your account.
  4. Tap Delete Backup > Turn Off & Delete. (if making more room)

In iOS 11.0, after taping on Manage Storage, you no longer tap the device, and you never see the Next Backup Size like before. How do we get to that data now? Additionally, where do we now turn off the backup for individual apps, another feature we use quite a bit.

Our students are finding that they can no longer deduce why they are having backup issues, and I am just frustrated and not willing to update my own device based on what I am seeing.

Hi! Tried that but it still doesn’t show the next backup size. I am actually switching to a new phone and was desperately trying to transfer information. In the end I decided to try computer’s iTunes instead. And now that I am not a NEW backup user (since I used iTunes for the backup), I can now see the screens that you have provided in the previous discussions, showing the next backup size. Not sure if this is a bug... Nevertheless thanks a lot! (:

This leads to the size of my current backup, which for some of our students do not exist due to not backing up. Additionally, they have some application with too much to store preventing Backup, such as Photos, or iMovie, that we can then see under the next backup size, and either address or turn off. This is the part that I am missing. Both of the following images are the iPad in Manage Storage (the one on the right allowed clicking once more into the specific device), one is iOS 11.0 (LEFT), the other with the information for Next Backup Size is iOS 10.3.3 (RIGHT).

I have verified that this device is attempting to backup. Trying to backup is actually what prompted the question. I am unable to complete the backup due to the backup size exceeding the available space, but without that screen, we are unable to see by how much or which applications we are over the 5GB. I doubt that Apple would have removed it since it also allows turning off iCloud backup for certain applications (Photos and iMovie being our most commonly turned off due to students not "cleaning house"), I just cannot find where they have moved it to.

Ah ha! That's where they've hidden it! We have a team of three at my school all looking at it off and on, and either it took one of our resets to get this to show and we never ventured back to that page, or that bit was being strange and trying to make us feel dumb. This morning, clicking on Backup only showed the top, no devices, now it is there plain as day!

Thank you so much for your help and patience!

Hi! I am facing the same issue even after looking through the screenshots in your earlier conversations. I have never used iCloud for backup before, and I am attempting to backup for the first time. I managed to back up my messages in Whatsapp when Whatsapp prompted me, but when I want to backup other stuff like contacts and calendar via iCloud settings, it keeps giving the error that there is lack of space. I am unable to view the “next backup size” function as well.

Hi Lubanek. I think we've already determined that you don't see the backup status until you've created a backup.

Can you try backing up to a computer and see if that helps?

Or, can you go into the backup settings and turn off most of the features? That might make the backup small enough to fit in your iCloud storage.

How much storage is used on your iPhone?

How much storage do you have on iCloud?

Hi Diana,

I tried both, unfortunately neither backup to iTunes nor switch off almost all the contents helped.

Then I tried to buy more space in iCloud and this helped. Then I realized, what was the problem. The iPhone with iOS 11.1.2 always tried to backup all the contents, he didn’t take into account my actual settings (e.g. unmark photos and so on).

And I’m sure, I tried to cancel the backup many times and started it again without all the contents.

After I bought 50GB in iCloud, the iPhone could finish the first backup successfully (8GB totally), then I unmarked photos again and the backup has now just 1,7GB, so it definitelly fits into original 5GB iCloud.

So from my point of view, the bug was, that iOS tried to backup all contents for the first time, it just ignores the settings (marked and unmarked contents).

And I had tried everything possible before, I switched the iPhone a few times in the previous two days, but it didn’t help.

Cinbady, how were you able to see this? I'm in the same boat as you were... It says I don't have enough space to backup but I've never backed up to icloud before so I don't know what to clear out. It's been very frustrating trying to figure this out.

I did back-up to itunes locally on my mac but I still cannot see what to delete on my iphone to allow it to backup to icloud.

Thanks!
