Difference between icloud and mac backup?

Have always backed up to a Mac but thinking about backing up via icloud and then transferring to a new iphone. Any negatives of doing it this way? What is the difference? Is there anything not backed up that causes a problem?

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11

Hi

Sorry but in the link above the list clearly includes "Health Data" under the list of what is included in an icloud backup. I've copied the text below - you will see that number 5 is "Health data". Maybe they didn't used to include it but its changed?:

Here’s what iCloud Backup includes

  • App data
  • Apple Watch backups
  • Call history
  • Device settings
  • Health data
  • HomeKit configuration
  • Home screen and app organization
  • iMessage, text (SMS), and MMS messages
  • Photos and videos on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch1
  • Purchase history from Apple services, like your music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books2
  • Ringtones
  • Visual Voicemail password (requires the SIM card that was in use during backup)

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I've backed up my phone via a computer now so can't check the above.

Neither backup contains music. Your music catalog is in the backup, but the music itself is downloaded from your iTunes media library, or, if it is iTunes purchased music, from the iTunes store.

Hi The link above says that icloud backups include health data. It also says that it includes device settings and app data. Most other passwords would be in keychain? Assume therefore that passwords would also be backed up.

Thanks

That is correct. iCloud backups include health data and passwords. iTunes backups only contain these items if Encrypt Backup is checked.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The reason I wanted to do an icloud back-up is because I tried to back-up to my laptop and there were some weird inconsistencies between my iphone and itunes related to downloaded music. I've actually now taken all the downloaded music off my phone because the icloud back-up wouldn't work and there were also some inconsistencies between different parts of my phone and what downloaded music it thought was on there. Thought it best to clear all and start again.

Anyway - am trying to back up to icloud and it seems the internet connection here is not good enough (I am on holiday).

As explained above I originally tried to back up via itunes on my mac book but experienced the above issues. I later read that I shouldn't have backed up to my laptop as I normally use my imac (which is at home) - is this correct, can you only back up/sync to one computer? I didn't get any warning messages when I did it - just the issue with downloaded music.

I believe my laptop is an authorised computer.

I ask because I am wondering whether to try to back up to my laptop again - or search around the local area for a better connection!

Hope that makes sense!

Thank you!
