My iPads Volume Replaced With Sound Effects and No Longer Works. HELP!

Hello, I have an iPad 2 running on iOS 9.3.5 and it was working normally up until about two weeks ago? The volume button works perfectly but instead of the usual volume icon that pops up on the screen indicating what level of sound its currently at, it's replaced with "sound effects" and there are no bars that go up or down when the volume is lowered or raised, and sometimes nothing appears at all. It's really frustrating because I can't watch any videos as the volume is muted unless headphones are plugged in. I believe this is most likely a software issue and I'm really hoping someone has got the answer!

Thanks!

Hey nadiaco,

Thanks for that updated info. Those were good steps to try. Restoring it to factory settings and setting up as new to test should work. You may want to try a less invasive step first. You can reinstall the iOS software on your iPhone. This should not affect any of your data, but it is always a best practice to make sure you have a current backup in either iTunes or iCloud. How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once you have a current backup, follow the steps in the section titled "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up" from the following article. These steps will reinstall iOS. Keep in mind that these steps were written for a different issue, but they will still help us isolate the situation further. If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

Let us know how that works out.

Cheers!

Hi nadiaco,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Community, I understand the volume buttons on your iPad is displaying the Sound Effects level instead of adjusting the volume of things like videos. I'm happy to help.

You'll want to make sure that the setting for Change with Buttons is turned off. Here's where you can check this setting:

1. Go to Settings > Sounds
2. Look for Change with Buttons. If it is engaged (green) tap to turn it off, then exit the settings app and test the volume buttons again.

If you still continue to have trouble with this, let us know.

Take care.
