Mac Preview: how do I discplay the sidebar

Hi, I'm looking at a PDF file. The sidebar was hidden, so I wanted to show it. When I look at the View menu, "Hide Sidebar" is checked. When I select "Hide Sidebar" in the View menu to un-check it, the Sidebar does not appear; the menu item remains checked. Re-starting Preview does not fix this. Re-booting the computer does not fix this. This is repeatable in multiple PDF files. The sidebar goes away and never comes back. There's no user manual for Preview that I can find. Search through questions was fruitless. So posting here. Mac Pro Tower 2010 running Mac OS 10.12.6. Thanks.

You want "Thumbnails", option-command-2. Then option-command-1 to hide them. You can also use the little toolbar menu at the top of the window, as mentioned earlier. Not quite as intuitive as you might be used to on a mac. Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

When I press Shift Command \ in Preview that toggles the appearance and removal of the graphic menu just above the PDF file.

Yes—if you do not have menu—than customize tool bar and drag back in or default.

Preview>View>Customize Tool Bar

Yes, I now see what you are asking. Yes, that option works.

So "Hide Sidebar" to remove, and "Thumbnails" to display, and the checkmark toggle does not work. What a crappy menu!

Thank you. I've changed the toolbar items in Preview... that may help with my work. And I've sent feedback to Apple regarding the Preview menu. May as well. Thanks again.

Sorry I see you are 10.12.6

Shift command \ for the tool bar include drop down menu for thumbnail sidebar

shift commad A for the markup
