iphone 8 mic problems

New problem. The new iphone 8 is great, but it is failing as a phone. During calls, the mic will suddenly stop and my callers will go, "are you there? Are you there?" I can still hear them, but they cannot hear me. Ideas? BTW, I am having a variety of other issues with IOS 11...

Exact same problem here .. Iphone 8 plus latest ios installed. Callers claim they here windy noise and voice drops out. I am going to exchange phone as I am in return period but I do not have much hope for a new one to work any better. This is very frustrating I hope it is software and not hardware. There is also a 38 page community discussion with the same problem with Iphone 7

Hi All,

let me share my experience with this problem and its solution ( for me ).

Bought iPhone 8 A1905 4 days ago, all seemed fine with IOS 11.1.1

I updated to 11.1.2 and then the problems started - same as all of you are mentioning - ( and got a bit upset ).

I investigated a bit to isolate the problem and:

  • Voice memos are fine
  • Video recording audio is fine
  • Whatsapp audio messages are fine
  • Bluetooth audio in the car is ok
  • Call with earphones are ok

The problem occurs only when calling on a "standard" phone call. Looks like the software mixes up the inputs from the 3 different microphones.

I was ready to downgrade to 11.1.1 but before doing that I tried some workarounds:

  • Performed a full restore with iTunes (IOS 11.1.2)
  • Turned off noise cancellation
  • LTE - data only
  • Soft reset

the problem seems to be disappeared ( for now ). This is not a real solution to the problem, but I will keep noise cancellation off until Apple solves this with an update.

Hope this will help someone.

Cheers

Just to fill everyone in, since I was in return period I actually went and got a brand new phone. 64gb Space Gray 8 Plus AT&T model. Same problem rigt in store. She suggested I try another return after i do the software update to 11.0.2 which I know wknt work. She suggested askig for the unlocked model as maybe there is an issue with this model perhaps. We shall see

I’m having the same issue even though i replaced the device. Mine is w/ at&t and here’s a temp solution i have is changing the cellular data option “ data only” from voice & data. (Setting>cellular data> cellular data option> select “data only”). No issues after changed the option. I’m wondering what carrier you guys are on. VOLTE is the service provided by the carrier for clear call quality, but mine ***** on that option!

I to have the new iPhone 8 and the mic is restricting people from hearing me correctly the problem comes and goes. I got the iPhone swapped for a second iPhone 8 it was fine for the first day and the problem returned.

My provider have changed the sim and I have reloaded iOS the problem is 100% s problem with the iPhone 8 itself. I hope they find a solution as I am getting very frustrated with it now. Very expensive phone that you can’t use.

Nothing official. Just need to replace my phone from Apple and get a replacement one. But from what I’m hearing that’s not a guaranteed fix because some people are having the same problem with the replacement phone. THe latest software update

Improved the phone mic a little but definitely did not fix the peoblem. This is very frustrating since we are paying for a brand new phone and getting something that is not working properly!

I’m done! This is day 2 of using my SECOND iPhone 8plus and this one is having the exact same issues as the one I returned. Since I am in the 2 week return policy this is going back once again, never to be seen again. Trouble shooting is not working and what are the odds I keep getting defective phones. Obviously pretty high. Sick of having to use speaker phone or headset in order for my calls to be heard. Common complaints “you sound muffled” “it’s sounds like you’re under water” “are you on speaker phone”

“I can barely hear you” ....frustrating for the money spent that this is even an issue.
