iCloud Contacts failing to sync after High Sierra

All of my other iCloud information synchronizes perfectly. Photos, Notes, Calendars, Reminders... But Contacts is not updating. The only account I’m using is iCloud. It downloads a version that might be a day old, but any changes I make are not synchronized back to the server.

I have tested my iPhone running iOS 11 and iCloud.com to make sure they are talking to each other, both ways. I can create a contact on both, and it will show up on the other consistently and instantaneously. My Mac, on the other hand, will never update changes in either direction.

I have attempted to disable and re-enable Contacts (with or without a restart in between), I have signed completely out of iCloud and back in (ugh), which seemed to get the latest Contacts initially, but then it failed to update after that. I’m now back to a stuck Contacts list. I’ve also disabled Contacts and deleted ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook as well as anything with AddressBook in the title in ~/Library/Preferences.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and has anyone found a workaround?

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

I have found a solution that works for me.

  1. quit Contacts
  2. open ~/Library/Containers and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  3. open ~/Library/Application Support and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  4. open ~/Library/Preferences and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  5. open ~/Library/Caches and delete anything with addressbook in its name
  6. opened System Preferences : iCloud and uncheck contacts
  7. restart your mac
  8. when it boots back up open System Preferences :iCloud and check contacts

a little spinner spins saying "setting up"

Once that's done then open Contacts and wait. I have around 5000 contacts so it took about 10 minutes to fully sync.

Not sure what you mean. As long as you have iCloud syncing your contacts (or anything else it can sync), they should appear the same on all devices syncing with that iCloud account (i.e.. your phone, computers, iPads etc.) It should be that if I change something on my Mac Contacts or add an image to one, that change should appear on all devices. What I'm saying is odd is that the HS Mac Contacts application isn't reacting to images in contacts that were already there and downloaded from iCloud, but is reacting if you add an image to a contact on the HS Mac. Then the HS Mac stops syncing to iCloud. Hope I'm making sense! LOL!

Just to be clear, when you say "i have recent numbers app in iPhone" - is that another App called "Recent Numbers?" or do you mean you have the "Numbers" app (which is a spreadsheet app like Excel)? or do you mean you just have updated recent phone numbers to your iPhone Contacts App?

I know nothing about deleting Library folders (but people here said in the end it didn't stop the behavior), but to answer your first question on how to find the Library file the first posted solution was talking about:

While in Finder on your top menu bar Choose "Go" and hold down the Option key. This will reveal the Library in the Finder (Mac HD>Users>home folder>Library>Containers)

Personally I think you should first try deleting photos from your various Contacts on your mac and see if that makes it sync to your iPhone & iCloud.

Good luck!

It's an iOS app called "Recent #s" by Kyle Gorlick. In the iOS App Store it is listed as "Recent Contacts" by Kyle Gorlick. There are other similar apps in the store too.

thanks for posting this!

i have:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)

mac os high sierra 10.13.2

iphone x ios 11.2.5

unchecked contacts...had to manually delete contacts on macbook to make it empty

no "~/Library/Containers" folder

no address files in "~/Library/Application Support"

no address files in "~/Library/Preferences"

no address files in "~/Library/Caches"

(by "~" i'm assuming you mean the name of your computer...mine is "Macintosh HD" ??...so "Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support" right ??)

do i go through folders within the above folders and find address files to delete?

i did...no address files

did the rest of the steps...no luck

i guess I have to find where address files are on my computer for my os

EXCELLENT!

I am happy that you found a workable solution. Give us an update in a few weeks - I'd like to know how that works out for you.

BTW, I also use two (2...!?!) Windows machines for work: (1) W v.7 and (1) W v. 10. AND, I have a "work" iPhone. I use Outlook (Exchange), G-Mail acct, "Mail", "Calendar", etc. on Windows 10, etc., etc., etc... I can transfer between all and all "devices within group" stay sync'ed up - unbelievable. We live in fantastic times.

I did read the directions! :-) And I spoke with tech support and got that DMG file. I couldn’t find the folder you were talking about. Does it appear in the file that’s generated (the one that gets sent to Apple), or in the system? I couldn’t find it in either place, but maybe you could help me focus in on where to look. I’m a total newbie!

Thanks.

THANK YOU!

I just checked that setting on my iPhone and came to realize the default account for contacts was set to G-mail. Changed it to iCloud and the contacts synced.

And like at least one other person replying in this thread, I could not find any of the files nor folders mentioned in the "solutions." And I knew there were multiple Library folders.

I have the latest version of High Sierra (10.13.6) but am unable to find a single file with a reference to "addressbook" or to a folder called Containers as indicated in these responses. Am having same issues. My iphone syncs with icloud but my mac does not (or only for contacts entered on mac and not for contacts entered on iphone. all software up to date.
