Numbers 4.3 new Currency formats/functions

Hi fellow Numbers users,

The update to Numbers 4.3 has caused some documents to "misbehave". Numbers 4.3 sometimes will only allow a "Data Format" of "Automatic" that will reflect only the currency of the source cells and can not be converted to another currency. Bugga!

Many replies have encouraged Feedback to Apple. That is the right thing to do. However, please be aware that the Apple employees who read your feedback are people. Apple employees will read your feedback, but who can blame them if they place a rant on the bottom of their inbox? Be polite, describe the problem and explain how an improvement will benefit you and other users of Numbers 4.3.

Please help your fellow users in this forum to help you. Give full details of your problem. Screen shots and formulas will help.

Some suggestions (workarounds) so far in this forum include:

  1. Use Number values instead of a Currency format. The header cell can act as a Currency label without 'controlling' the body cells.
  2. Use Custom Formats to give the appearance of a Currency value whilst acting as plain numbers.
  3. Explore the functions in Numbers 4.3
Type = in a spare cell to bring up the Function Browser. Click on Financial and explore the various functions. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I am sure that I have missed something, because every user has a different aim.

Positive replies are welcome.

Regards,

Ian.

Another small contribution as I wrote in a previous conversation:

Using Numbers 4.3, I have no problems calculating a profit/loss % based on two currency values.User uploaded file

The values in column B & C are formatted as currency (€, 2 decimals).

The values in column D are formatted as a percentage (%, 0 decimals), although the source values are both formatted as currency.

Hear! Hear!

(I include the link to show why I think that expression means the same in Australia as it does here; I'm often unsure about these things.🙂)

And one small addition:

If one cannot avoid using the Currency data format, as when using the CURRENCY() and CURRENCYCONVERT() functions, then keep in mind that the VALUE() function usually works to convert the results of CURRENCY() or CURRENCYCONVERT() to Number format.

Hi Ian,

You might also want to include the suggestion regarding reverting to Numbers 4.2 for the duration.

SG wrote:

Hi Barry,

Don’t think reverting is a great option, unless using Numbers on an unconnected Mac. Will the older version play well with Numbers for iOS, where it’s not so easy to revert?

I think that this requires a new discussion or a new User Tip 😉.

Ian.

P.S. The new Financial functions are also available in Pages 6.3 👿.
