My car, 2017 Infiniti QX60 will not read or send Texts.

Please help! I just got a new car, 2017 Infiniti QX60. My phone, iPhone 6s plus is connected via Bluetooth. Calls and music come over fine but I cannot send nor receive text messages. I have selected "allow notifications" in the Settings menu. I also followed the instructions in the manual to no avail. the errors are not consistent. On one occasion, I was able to get as far as selecting a recipient from my phonebook, but then when I selected a text to send, it says "cannot send message - phone disconnected"! And that only happened once - on all other occasions when I try to send, it says "messaging not available" - if I try to read it says "messaging list empty". Urgh! help!
