Apple TV 4K White Flashes

I'm seeing occasional white flashes on the screen. Easily seen on the screen savers but I've seen them on content too like Netflix and HBO.

I saw them about every 10 to15 minutes the flash looks like a single frame of digital noise.

My setup is ATV4K to Denon X2400H to a Vizio M65C1 class. I have brand new Monoprice high speed certified premium HDMI cables. I've turned all video processing from the Denon.

I saw flashes every 10 to 15 minutes when the setting was 4KSDR 50Hz.

I did a video settings reset through the Apple TV and it changed to 4KSDR 60hz. I have seen an occasional flash but very infrequent maybe one every couple of hours. . So there’s an improvement but still something is going on.

Software issue? Hardware issue?

I'm seeing flashing frames when my Apple TV is in Dolby Vision mode. The flashes are ghost images of the screen offset to the right. The flashes last a microsecond (a single frame, it seems), and they occur several times per minute, no matter what I'm watching on the Apple TV. The image below is a single frame of the Apple TV home screen taken from video that I shot with my iPhone. You can see the ghost images of app icons superimposed over other app icons. (The rectangular thing over the HBONow, hulu, and AMC app icons is a reflection of a window in the room; but the other ghost images are the flashing frames on the screen.)

I'm running the latest tvOS software, but the issue began to appear several days before I updated the system software. It's not an issue with my LG TV, because when I watch Dolby Vision content through the built-in Netflix app on the TV, without Apple TV, there are no flashes. Anyone else experiencing this?

Hey Fred, can you check to see if the useable port is HDCP2.2a compatible? And the other ones are not?

if should say on the port itself or the manual.

Just found it,

”HCDP 2.2 is supported only by the TV’s HDMI (MHL) port...”

and this his is where Apple TV 4K is operating at 4K problem free.

Having the same issue. Sony 4K TV HDMI 2 / MHL support. Directly connected. 4KSDR 60Hz

I have a Sony XBR 4K as well. As I recall, to display UHD, I had to go into the manual and change the ports to UHD 60Hz 4.4.4. Give it a go.

Same issue here on a Sony KD-49XE9005. Tried other HDMI input, bought new cables but issue is still there. Anyone with other suggestions to resolve this?

Apple told me that a workaround for this problem is to turn Dolby Vision off. I hope Apple will fix it soon.

what you experience is different then the white flashes as described in the opening post and what I experience. Do you experience random whites flashes as welll?

No, I don't see white flashes. Just ghost image flashes of the screen, offset about a third of the way to the right of the screen width.

Update 2: The flashing came back a few hours after I switched to input 2 on the LG tv. Ugh.

Has anyone found a fix for this? I'm thinking of returning my Apple TV 4K and just using the TV's built-in apps since they work fine but ATV4K has the annoying flashes.

When I installed iOS 11.2 on Apple TV and turned on options "Match Dynamic Range" and "Match Frame Rate" (https://9to5mac.com/2017/12/04/tvos-11-2/) the flashes became history. They are gone now.
