mac os High Sierra loses bluetooth mouse after a couple of minutes

Using two different mice on MBP running High Sierra, mouse becomes not connected after about 3 minutes inactivity and has to be re-found. Both work perfectly on iMac running Sierra. Am I doing something stupid?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Possible cause: USB 3.0/2.0 devices causes strong interference with the wireless built-in devices. That was my case. My particular solution: a powered usb 3.0 hub wit shielded cable far away the Mac (a tp-link UH700 or similar).

Info about the interference:

Logitech

WIRELESS PRODUCT NOT WORKING PROPERLY WHEN ALSO USING A USB 3.0 DEVICE

Apple Support:

Bluetooth: Unreliable wireless performance may occur when USB 3.0 external devices are close

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

I've had bluetooth issues on a Mac (Sierra, then High Sierra) for ages, mouse and keyboard always disconnect about 20 seconds after logging in then there's a wait while they reconnect. I tried all the commonly discussed solutions but nothing worked. To cut a long story short, the culprit was the Garmin Express app looking for GPS receivers at log-in, when I stopped Garmin Express from auto-starting the problem just went away. So it's worth checking to see if any other programs interfere with BT by selectively preventing them starting automatically.

Oddly i had the problem with Mac Mini 2010 (i bought used). I began using it with USB pc keyboard and mouse the day I got it (and soon found I was missing out on the Apple experience and didn't wanna remap all my keys). I went to the store and bought new Apple Magic keyboard and mouse, and at first had all four attached. I unplugged the USB ones. At this point the Apple magic bluetooth devices kept "detaching themselves" every few or several minutes.

(at first i assumed the used mac mini has some bad repair/memory or something?). i reset nvram pram same thing, detachment was still happening.

I deleted the blue tooth devices and they re-appeared. That didn't help either. Finally I saw "device pairing" in Help and tried "pairing the bluetooth devices". I had to do it twice 🙂 The detaching just stopped happening after that. I have to say it was the device pairing that did the trick? (see help on bluetooth menu about pairing devices)

I too have the same issue since the High Sierra update (mouse works fine on other laptops).

It IS an OS issue and it is very very annoying.

I can get the mouse to work by removing it from the paired devices on the Mac via the Bluetooth panel in system preferences and then putting the mouse into 'Pairing' mode and re-adding it again.

No restart required.

BUT

As soon as I stop using the mouse for a few minutes, it the MAC disconnects the mouse and I would have to go through the whole thing again,

Can't be bothered with that so using a wired mouse until there is a fix.

I still think some of the bluetooth problems might be caused by certain kinds of installed software. It's been four weeks since I disabled the Garmin Express app and I haven't had a single drop-out since. Before that time, Magic mouse and keyboard disconnects were driving me crazy, but since getting rid of the Garmin software I've had no problems at all. I'm tempted to re-install Garmin Express to see if the problem returns but to be honest I don't know enough about what's going on, and I'm waiting to see if anyone else has success by removing third party software.

I've also hit this same issue; after upgrade to High Sierra AND when connected to an external display through display port, the bluetooth loses connectivity - this seems to happen mostly after waking up from sleep, but also sometimes without warning while working.

When the bluetooth is lost and checking in the System Report it seems that the bluetooth adapter is no longer found by the OS - i.e. there is nothing under bluetooth section - so the issue is not about bluetooth connectivity but the OS stops talking to the Bluetooth adapter.

I've tried the SMC reset, NVRAM reset, disconnecting/reconnecting, removing the .plist, resetting bluetooth, disabling the handoff between mac and iCloud. None of these have taken the issue away. Can't say for sure, but disabling the handoff actually made the issue appear less frequently, but it is still a daily issue..

The problem seems to be related to the external display connection; when the bluetooth connectivity is lost - unplugging the display and reconnecting it restores the bluetooth connections in a couple of seconds.

Hope Apple comes with a fix to the OS - this is a really frustrating.

I had a terrible problem with my Magic Mouse 2 and trackpad being uncontrollable. I tried everything. I turned off my mouse, and disconnected it. This still left my trackpad not working properly. I restored my Macbook Pro to factory, reinstalled High Sierra, disk repair in safe mode. Nothing worked. I called Apple and they went thru a checklist of things to do. Including make sure my charger was Apple, I was plugged into an three prong adapter and my mouse was fully charged. At the end of the call, nothing worked.

I was exhausted, frustrated and mad! I have had my Macbook Pro since early 2011 and I love it. I've never had an issue with this Macbook. I have had to replace the battery but that's it. I reluctantly put my Macbook up....

Then yesterday I was on my husband's Dell. I started researching this issue and found an article about this issue. They said first try disconnecting the mouse. Then go into system preference and turn off bluetooth. After that, turn your mouse back on. Low and behold - it worked! My Macbook Pro is up and running again!

I was lucky that this worked. There was a more complicated solution, but luckily I didn't have to attempt it.

@felixpetzold: I think I have the same problem.

(1) Bluetooth works

(2) I turn bluetooth off in the menu bar by clicking: 'Turn bluetooth off'

(3) Bluetooth turns off, but bluetooth icon remains turned on

(4) Cannot turn bluetooth back on

(5) I reboot my Macbook (MBA Mid-2012; MacOS 10.13 (17A405)

(6) Bluetooth icon is turned off and I can turn bluetooth on again.

I tried the hidden 'Reset bluetooth module' from the bluetooth debug menu. (shift-option click on Bluetooth icon, Debug menu). But that didn't help.

Sometimes I can turn off the Bluetooth and the icon turns off as well. Then I can turn BT back on without any issue. But most of the time I can only turn BT off and the BT menu icon stays on, resulting in situation (4): I cannot turn BT back on again.

So in my case it is not related to any device, it is the entire BT module.

Everything really feels like a software issue. Especially since this behaviour started after I upgraded to High Sierra.
