Larger file sizes than Word

I have noticed that when i save basic word documents in pages the file size is often double the size of the Word file i export using Pages so that i can edit the file at school. I was just wondering if this was normal or if anyone else has noticed this. I dont understand why it would almost be double the file size when the same amount of text and formatting is involved
thanks

Moonman,

If I create two identical documents containing a single sentence "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back.", the Word document saves at 20KB and the Pages doc saves at 44KB. Over "twice the size".

But for identical copies of a 200-page document with 15 graphics, the Word doc is 2.7MB and the Pages doc is 1.9MB.

If Pages documents are only "twice the size" when they are so tiny, perhaps the difference is irrelevant and even falls in Pages' favor if you have some bigger documents as well.

For smaller documnets there will be a larger discrepancy between the two document formats. Why? Mostly because of the fact that pages documents can have extra pages that you can choose from.

All that text on the blank text page that you can add costs in terms of realestate. Include a newsletter template with twelve pages and a 'blank' one page document automatically contains thirteen pages, full of text and pictures.

A larger document that has more of your own pages than the preset template pages will be closer to the word equivalent (unless there are loads of photos or other information. Those all add to the size of the file accordingly).

I hope that helps,
Gerry.
