Thanks for the tip Luis, I uninstalled Perian and now can import the videos directly from the camcorder to iMovie just fine, after a lot of frustrating attempts and going through the file conversions. I should have tired this first, thank you!
How is Apple incompetence if you were running an old Quicktime plugin, that has been abandoned years ago, and is not compatible with the current OS?
You could surely cite instances of Apple incompetence - the root access with no password, for example. This one is not one of them.
It is called regression testing Luis. For those users who have not removed a Plug in that was working fine in the previous OS (and judging from this thread many people were affected as Perian is not top of my list when thinking about my laptop) upgrading caused pain. Even removing Perian will not solve the problem as date stamp is incorrect. I appreciate OS are complicated but there is not doubt that the reliability, dependability, stability, and quality of upgrade of Apple OS has dramatically decreased in the last 10 year or since they have decided to ship software for free and stick to a 1 year upgrade cycle. I can't count how many issues I had with iMovie/FCP in the last few years. Yeah, that's incompetence or negligence in my opinion.
I just use your first "Q" after having read the various replies, I resume:
1.Apple must quickly up-grade High Sierra to allow again working properly on iMovie (ex SD cards..Sony, Canon - arch H.264). Hope they hurry up and forget their trend to iPhones for a while...
2. Since 6.01.2018 I can import clips ex memory card (Sony HDR-CX570E) into iMovie but there is no sound on the clip as described by you and other people using MAC-Apple (imovie).
3. It was not even possible to exit the CD card (saying it still works), neither to disconnect iMovie (also in work!!) When forced to exit (via Apple sign), the SD card got free, but all the clips (image without sound) got into an image with a "?" sign. Thus useless. I had to cancel all of them, even the whole project.
4.I decided to use a Canon photo camera G16 for still photos und "filming": and here the big surprise:
a) I could import photos / clips to "PHOTO" and also clips to iMovie which produced image and linked sound (below the image).
5. Now what is wrong with imovie/High Sierra and with the Apple Team ?
6. By the way I went to an Apple approved shop near Morges(Switzerland) and had the SD card (ex Sony Caméscope CX570) inserted into their iMac for a check up: surprise, the clip showed the image and the sound connected to.
My iMac 27" with i7 was produced as per info in late 2013. I hope it's still a "new" one.
Appreciate Apple's reaction to keep their clients happy.

I am still having the same issue. I have never installed Perian on my system, and it is not installed now. My MBP was purchased in April of 2017. Whenever I import AVCHD video (whether from the camera or from the memory card) the video is jerky and corrupted.
And yes, these clips are fine when viewed on the camera's screen.
Apple support has been no help. They even threw up their hands and had me send the computer away to have the logic board replaced. When I got it back, I did a complete clean instal--no relics from my old system. Brand new logic board. Clean instal of OS. No settings migrated over from Time Machine or anything like that.
Surprise! It didn't work. I still can't import AVCHD clips without tons of issues.
Hi tbirdvet
The Canon HF50 can record in MPEG4 format as well as AVCHD format. I wonder if you were recording in the MPGE4 mode and that's why it was no problem?
Alright I will act as mentioned in yr Mail.
Get rid of those Apps.
But note that the problem started on 6th Jan 2018 only!
As all worked well I was not concerned with other
Apple iMovie users!
So Apple seems having started to make me
Loose my time and dissatisfaction ....
This for your unpleasant remark...

You should ask what is wrong with your system.
iMovie, FCP X, etc work fine with AVCHD, and the "no audio in AVCHD" problem has been clarified time and again - you almost certainly have Perian and/or the A52, probably from a long time ago.
Unistall those things, restart your mac and use AVCHD as you did before.

Hi there, I have exactly the same issues you have described. I have also tried to import using other software (Wondershare pro). it does the trick but then when moving to iMovie, those clips seem to be buggy, as thumbnail preview does not show, most of them can't be played (spinning wheel). Not sure why. Sony's software does not work with High Sierra (see my post above). Final cut presents the same problem. Which software have you used? And yes, Apple, get on this!
Tks Luis, have now removed Persian but I am having to fix an issue that seems to be a collateral effect of such removal ([update required] label in place of username at log in screen). Then will check whether it has made any difference with iMovie/FCP. It’s quite disheartening that we have to troubleshoot this problem ourselves. I am not seeing much help from Apple.
AVCHD is a de facto standard for Sony, one of the biggest manufacturers. It is obviously not the case. It is the case that often Apple “experts”are out of their depth and keep confounding communities instead of taking the issue to engineers and get some proper advice. But hey...
Hi Luis
I agree with you completely, It makes no sense not to support AVCHD, I am just repeating what I was told by the Apple iMovie specialist after two hours and several levels. Maybe the tech is wrong but I still can't import AVCHD files. I checked and I don't have Perian on my computer. Unless someone has another possibility I will have to try apple support again.
Thanks
Bruce
I have read through the discussion but cannot find a solution to my exact problem. Very desperate and would appreciate any help, please!
I am able to start the import process from the Sony camcorder - and the clips are appearing in My Media, they can be viewed, used and edited on the projects BUT the circular 'download' icon on the botton of each clip is still dark and when the same symbol is clicked on the top right corner of the screen - it states that it is importing the clips, but nothing is happening.
I have never had a problem before until last night installing High Sierra and the new iMovie.
PLEASE HELP!
So just realised the tip about PERIAN. I removed it and like magic the import seems to be working again. But not with all clips. Some clips seem to import but are not visible anywhere in My Media. Extremely frustrating! Any tips?
Thanks again for your response.
I finally did check the compatible camcorder list and mine
Canon VIXIA HF R600
Format: AVCHD / H.264
Media: Memory
Region: NTSC
was on the list.
I had Perian installed a long time ago, like 2012, but no longer.
Hi Nico, did you experience any issues in the users’ list login window after removing Perian? I can’t see users pictures and I see “update needed” in place of the user name. Tks.
