Just an FYI, for those of you using AirPods, I just had mine randomly stop working during phone calls. I could listen to music on them just fine but when I received a phone call - no sound would come through. I reset the AirPods and still had the issue - but I found that performing a reset of my network settings did the trick. Iphone 8+.

I had the same exact problem, but with iPhone 7+. I've actually had the problem for a while, it was intermittent, but when I upgraded to iOS11, it rendered the airpods unusable for phone calls. Then I read this post, tried your solition, and voila!! I've been dealing with this issue for weeks now and it is fixed. THANKS!!
For everyone else who has this issue:
Go to iPhone Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This does erase settings for WiFi and other bluetooth devices, so you have to re-do passwords for WiFi networks you automatically joined and may have to re-connect to bluetooth devices that were already connected.

I tried this with my iPhone 8+ and no luck. It deleted my network settings, but not my bluetooth settings.
I'm seeing a consistent pattern. When I restart my phone, my Airpods work for the first call. Then there is no sound on subsequent calls. I have tried unpairing, resetting, and re-pairing them. Nothing is working yet.
Same problem here. I've had this problem for months. Apple even replaced a pair of airpods for me and no luck. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Didn't work with my iPhone 7 Plus and now doesn't work with my iPhone X.
This didn't work for me. On the very first call I tried, the AirPods failed.
