textedit not open after force quit

I tried to paste a lot of text into TextEdit, then TextEdit becomes not responding and I killed it. From that time, I cannot open any file with TextEdit anymore. It doesn't have response.

I tried delete TextEdit....plist and restart. It doesn't work.

The sharing & permission of TextEdit shows Custom privilege for everyone. And it says I don't have permission to change it even I have the admin permission of the system and can unlock the lock on the bottom right of this dialog.

MacOS Sierra 10.12.6

Press and hold the shift key when launching TextEdit. It should resume normal operation.

Then quit all other open applications, and reboot your Mac. That will kill any background processes associated with the TextEdit activity.

Did you restart the computer? That should regenerate a new .plist when you open the application.

I tried again to kill all process looks might be using TextEdit and restart. Then there is a dialog pop up when I click on any Doc with 'shift' pressed down. The dialog ask me whether I want to reopen to the position before it was force killed. I selected 'not reopen', but still no respond and I see the memory usage of TextEdit grows to 6GB

Thank you for the reply. But as I already tried this method and it doesn't work. I tried again as you said, still not working. BTW, there is already no com.apple.TextEdit.plist in that folder anymore since I deleted it last time.

Thanks for the reply, though it doesn't work. Seems TextEdit is still trying to load the pasted text and memnory usage grow to more than 6G very fast.

It still doesn't work. This time, if I hold 'shift' and click on any document. TextEdit doesn't even load

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
