Calculator widget on notification panel

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone found this problem after the upgrade to macOS High Sierra.

The calculator widget on notification panel presents a bug: presents by default the number 475 (not zero).

Scenario 1: (re)start the computer, go to the notification panel and the calculator presents the number 475.

Scenario 2: Press "ac" and the calculator goes to 'zero'. Good. I can make calculations... everything fine. But: a) if I left the notification panel and come back in a short time (5 seconds), the calculator presents the number from the last action; b) but if I come back later (for example one minute), the calculator presents the number 475 (again).

Anyone have a similar bug?

Thanks 'mons.fractus'.

Who knows, knows 🙂

Effectively solves the problem of the stuck number.

The only problem that remains is that the calculator does not retain the number of the last operation. After a few seconds the value returns to zero.

In that case, what you doing here? Losing time with foolish people that just want things working? Losing time with jokes? The way that is best for my productivity is a judgment that you can't do!

So, if you are so busy in your 'world', don't lose time with us!

In my case, I didn't concentrating all my energy on a recalcitrant solution! This is a post just to check if it's a transversal bug... Only that! The only way found to notify the problem (if Apple cares...). Or there is any official way to report a macOS bug?

I have that same problem but different numbers.
After upgrade High Sierra my Calc widget default is 25,46 everytime.

After restart numbers are 25,46 and after press AC it goes 0.
So i can make calculations but if i switch other program and then go back to widget i see last numbers around of 0,1 second and it switch back to 25,46.

Hi

I have the same problem, but my "aficionado" number il 72.

I guess it simply keeps fixed the first result of a calculation made after the upgrade.

By the way... sometimes it's impossible to give keyboard focus to the calculator:

the only way is to close and open some times the side panel.

Bugs of the first release, I guess...

******EDIT: Right after posting this, the persistent number returned. Dang.

Rather than delete the file, open it and make a couple of minor edits.

In my case, the number 43.34.

The file contained one line of code with the persistent value.:

bplist00‘ WdisplayYregisterX\lastOperator\lastRegisterU43.34U43.34Q*Q2 #0=CIK M

I edited the line by replacing the stored value with an asterisk. See below.

bplist00‘ WdisplayYregisterX\lastOperator\lastRegisterU*U*Q*Q2 #0=CIK M

This allows for stored values to persist until cleared no matter how many times the notifications panel is opened and closed. But when cleared, the zero will persist. Calculations seemed to work OK, too.

If you backed up the file with a smiilar name, the bug will happen again. Once the change is confirmed, the bug file can be deleted.

Thanks - fixed the problem for me and the calculator works fine now. Didn't bother to back up the file as the only other files in the preferences directory were all marked 'security' so the calculator plist was the only notifications widget with a plist in this directory. This gave me confidence that deletion wouldn't have any lasting effect. Thanks again mons.fractus. Nice one.

Are you kidding me? How are we supposed to be able to retrieve numbers e.g. from multiple windows in an app, or even different parts of an email, to enter them into the calculator if it goes to 0 every time we change focus?

Are there any calculator apps that aren't 1) $10, and 2) full of scientific functions the average user doesn't need, that work with Notification Center? The app store is only showing about two dozen apps for Notification Center to begin with. It's maddening not to have an easily accessible calculator that works properly.

Just received a reply from the developer of the PEMDAS calculator widget. The newest version (3.1) "white calculator" requires you to restart the computer after installation to fix an issue with macOS causing the calculator to look distorted or missing graphical sections. After restarting my computer, v3.1 works perfect. If any of you who have posted your concerns/complaints with how after upgrading to High Sierra the calculator in Notifications resets to zero (which I previously stated in this discussion is how Apple developers programmed it to function now), or it repopulates with the total you had before upgrading, I encourage you to give this widget a try. Just follow my instructions above on how to set it up.

If what we want is having a visible calculator that retains the last total and even has the benefit to be moved around the screen as an overlay, then based on my experience, PEMDAS is the solution for me. I am not satisfied with the results deleting the .plist/.config file give since all it does it reset the total to zero the moment you go to another window, screen, open/close the Notification sidebar, etc.

Just chiming in to ask for an official fix. There is no way this behavior is "by design." I appreciate the PEMDAS alternative but I'm really looking for a calculator widget for the Today panel of the notification center. The official one used to work. It's crazy that it's been broken as long as it has. If there's a third-party widget that can be added to the notification center, I'll take that.
