Photos crashing on people tab on High Sierra

Hi,

Since updating to MacOS 10.13 High Sierra, I was looking forward to finally sorting out all my faces (now "people") and having them sync across my devices.

I am using iCloud Photo Library and I had updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS 11 last week and it had already scanned my photo library and found some people, but not as many as I had already tagged in Mac Photos previously (when they did not sync).

Now, it seems Photo's had a hard time merging my previous faces with the new "people" and every time I go into most (but not all) people in the mac photos app, it just crashes.

Anyone had anything similar or know a fix?

Cheers,

Vinny

So it is not dependent on the user library.

We have seen a few reports here, that a combination of the crop tool and the Curves adjustments can cause crashes in Photos. But for many people this is working well, so it could still be a problem with your user account or third-party software you installed.

  • To test, if the problem is not caused by settings in your user account, launch Photos from the guest user account and test there on a new library: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443
  • To test, if installed third-party is interfering, test in Safe Mode. The Mac will be terribly slow, but Safe-Mode will disable all third-party kernel extensions and clear some caches: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If Photos is still crashing in a new user account and even in Safe Mode, reinstall the system from the recovery partition. Photos can only be reinstalled by reinstalling the system. If your system should be inconsistent after a sequence of incremental updates, it frequently helps to reinstall from recovery. Just make a current backup, the start your Mac from the recovery partition by holding down ⌘R at start-up and select "Reinstall MacOS X". You do not need to wipe the the drive and make a clean install. Reinstalling from recovery will make a complete reinstall of the system, but leave the user data and applications installed.

In the London store a 27 inch iMac with fusion drive was fine, but a MBP with a SS HD failed as did a Mac Pro.

Having tested about 20 different Macs at 4 different locations most laptops failed,2 passed, why I have no idea.

It could be something to do with the fusion drive, but who knows,Apple do not know as none of the 7,yes 7 2nd level

technicians I have spoken to has came back with an answer.

I wonder wether the new iMac Pro is reliable, will it crash when reimporting an image into the editing.User uploaded file

Markup is available on all showroom Macs, this is the software used as a test, on reimporting an image when scrolling to a new image Photos misbehaves.

Luminar also has the same problem, but any import is at risk.

This is my Mac:-User uploaded file

Tried same test on a MBP it crashed and this is after update number 3.

By "exporting an image to Markup", do you mean using the Markup photo editing extension in Photos?

I tested this on my MacBook Pros on High Sierra, macOS 10.13.2 and it did not crash. Perhaps it is the different Graphics Card?

Did you scroll to other images, this is where I find my problem.Three clicks to the right or left and boom it crashes.

I asked two second level AppleCare Techs to try the test on their computers ,result one pass one fail.

Just tried using Luminar extension and after importing file and scrolling to another image ,it crashed.

Apple have been sent :-User uploaded file

Still no Answer!

and every time I go into most (but not all) people in the mac photos app, it just crashes.

Make a few tests, to narrow down the problem. It would help to know, if Photos is only crashing on your current user library or also on a new library created just for testing (see this help page: Create additional photo libraries - Apple Support). And test, if Photos is also crashing, if launched from different user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

After trying the guest user account and Safe Mode unsuccessfully, I reinstalled the MacOS using Command-R and still Photos crashed/froze when I tried to crop a photo. I'm on telephone hold with Apple support. Thanks for the insights. There's another discussion thread on High Sierra freezes that points to a GPU problem. I don't know what the GPU is, unfortunately. See Re: High Sierra freeze.

GPU is short for Graphics Processing Unit (graphics card).

When you tested in Safe Mode, the advanced features of the graphics processing unit have been disabled. Then a problem with the GPU is less likely.

Which Mac model are you using? Some MacBook Pros are having known problems with the graphics card, resulting in video problems, see, and there has been a replacement program: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

I tried this and it worked (so far)

  1. Hold down Option-Command while you open Photos.
  2. In the dialog that appears, click Repair to start the repair process.

WARNING!!!

1 - always backup prior to re[pairing a library - if the library has major problems the repair can make things worse

2 - remember that if you are using iCloud Photo Library doing a library repair will trigger a new total upload of all photos to iCloud which will take days or weeks and lots of internet bandwidth

I've not had that problem nor have I seen it posted here

please copy and post the first 100 or so lines of the crash report

and maybe giving Photos time to do its background uploads and scans will help - I suggest keeping the Mac powered and awake with Photos not running [not everyone agrees with this but I've found it works the best for me] for several days and see if that improves this

I have a brand new 2017 MBP, maximum configuration

Photos manages to completely lock up my machine.

The first time it happened, I left the mac running all night in hopes it would unscrew itself. It did not.
The next day I switched on remote access and allowed Photos to crash again, same result

Then I used ssh to go in and "killall Photos", nothing happened to the UI, but the Photos app and all related processes did disappear. I Ran "top -o cpu" and there was no process using excessive cpu power.

in "sudo su" I typed "reboot" and nothing happened.

I had to force shutdown via the power button, the resulting boot thereafter ended up running fsck_hfs for hours in the background. My backup array seems to have taken the biggest hit, right now it's replacing a 5.44TB chunk of itself with a fresh backup. It's pretty sad that something that seems as innocuous as Photos can inflict this kind of damage

Whatever this crash is, it completely cripples a mac

I have a similar problem, but not with faces, when I try to crop a photo after "upgrading" to High Sierra. The program completely crashes my iMac and I have to manually shut it down using the power button. I've tried creating separate libraries, importing the same photos, and each time my machine crashes. VERY VERY disappointed in the "upgrade" and need a solution fast.

If anyone has help or suggestions to fix this "glitch" I'd really appreciate it before I purchase an app or software to handle my over 16,000 photos. Thanks.

I have had similar problems, infact a senior apple tech had the same result on his computer when I was speaking to him on the phone.

I suggested that I was thinking of reinstalling Sierra from Time Machine and was told that it was not a good idea.

Something is going on, is there major a problem that nobody will talk about?

Oh for the good old days, when we had Aperture.

I have not experienced any Photos 3.0 crashes when working with the People album, but I reset the album right from the start on all devices, after I upgraded to High Sierra and iOS 11. The reason I reset the People album were the many empty faces thumbnail in my people album. These had been caused by deleting automatically detected faces while still running ele Capitan and they were making a mess of the People album on sierra and High Sierra. After resttig the people album all was well. To reset the album I had to remove all named people from the People album and then a prompt appeared, asking if I want to reset all named faces.
