Hide message preview
How do I have messages not appear on home screen

Are you referring to the preview of the message, or are you referring to the actual notification itself? If you mean the preview, then go to Settings>Notifications>Messages>Show Previews>Never would turn the preview off completely. There are two additional settings there, choose what you wish.
