Sending a message without iMessage requires a cellular data connection. Either way, you need an internet connection of some kind to message.
I have iMessaged from my iPod for years and recently got an iPhone 6s. But I am on a pay and talk plan. I can figure out how to get other iMessage users to be able to text back when I have no wifi/data. I figured out how to send and they have received it. Will I have to get a data plan?

Yes, messaging via iMessage requires an internet connection.
If your plan includes texts iOS users can send you messages by changing settings to “Send as “SMS”.
Thank you. I realize that but I can't seem to figure out how to send the message without iMessage if someone has an iPhone I can't seem to get their messages when I don't have wifi. Sorry if that is confusing.
Ok. I am guessing I'll need to get a data plan. Thanks
