High Sierra Photos Editing Issue

Since upgrading to High Sierra a frequently used feature for me in the Photos app is the retouch tool. Since the upgrade it's been very, very slow. On a few photo it starts out quickly and then the touches which should be immediate are delayed or simply don't happen at all.

Hopefully, if anyone else is running into this, that the upcoming 10.13.1 will fix it.

My Photos is at present working as it should!!! Here is the pain I went through to get this working and the some pain I continue to have:

  1. I backed up my drive to an external drive using Superduper! - This makes a bootable copy of my system in case something went wrong( I also back up to Time Machine and Backblaze but I wanted to be safe)
  2. I did a clean install of 10.13.3 High Sierra - which included the following steps
    1. Created a bootable installation USB drive for 10.13.3 High Sierra
    2. Booted system to the above USB drive
    3. Erased my hard drive using disk utilities on bootable USB
    4. Installed High Seirra
    5. During install, 1 migrated all users, data and settings EXCEPT applications from backup I made in step 1. This means I will have to install all 3rd party apps manually.
  3. Once Step 2 completed in total(about 7 hours later) I tried using Photos and it worked great! Yay!
  4. The next thing I did was install back my missing apps one by one. After each app install I would restart and check Photos. The apps that installed and DID NOT affect Photos performance are as follows:
    1. Office 2016
    2. Pages
    3. Numbers
    4. Keynote
    5. Backblaze
  5. Dropbox however broke Photos. I installed Dropbox for Business, linked it back to my Dropbox folder, rebooted, logged back in and waited for a bit. Then I checked Photos and I was back to the lock up behavior described in my previous post 😟 Once I quit Dropbox and uninstalled it (threw it away out of the Applications folder) and restarted, Photos started working as it should.

I will keep checking Photos over the next week and post if it starts acting up again I still have to install Steam and Parallels and I will post if those break Photos.

Hope that helps - Will send Apple feedback as well.

I was just playing around with a RAW file from an Oly EM1. This is after the 10.13.3 update. The moment I attempted to make any sort of an edit on the file my computer froze and was unusable for just over a minute. Same with a Nikon RAW file from a D7000. Jpegs are much more usable. Before High Sierra, editing of RAW and Jpegs was not an issue.

So no, no real fix yet that I'm seeing.

After about 15 years of being an Apple user this is the first time I've ever had a complaint about an OS update, paid or unpaid.

Incremental updates do not help much, if the problem is with system parts that have been installed by a previous version. I am occasionally reinstalling the system from recovery, to be sure that I get a consistent system. But this update does not mention any specific Photos bugfixes anyway, only fix for graphics problems on the iMac Pro:

The Retouch tool does not cause any performance problems on my MacBook Pros (mid 2015), only the results are poor and disappointing.

I am using only the Luminar 2018 extension for retouching for the time being.

The Retouch Tool is not just slow, it is giving strange results when sampling the texture.

The result seems to depend on the position of the sampled area and on the number of previous edits.

For example - I wanted to clone the cloud in this RAW file from my Panasonic DMC FZ300:

I cloned the cloud in the middle and brushed it in into the lower left corner, the upper left corner, the upper right corner and lower right corner. Brushing in the texture to the left of the sampled area seems to work, but to the right will result in a faint blurred area instead.

When I revert the image to the original I can suddenly duplicate the cloud in the area to the right of the cloud too. Retouching seems to work as expected, as long as I retouch at most two blemishes and no previous edits have been applied. The same happens with the RAW files from my Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

I just updated to High Sierra 10.13.5 and the update has not solved my problem with slow editing in Photos with raw files. Photos app was 3.0 (3271.13.150) before and after the update. Apple Support told me they were aware of the problem many months ago. They keep saying they are working on a fix. It has been 8 months since this bug was introduced in Version 3.0 of Photos.

After LONG wait I got through to Apple Support. It was suggested I repair Photos, repair "Home" and I have done both. The more I work with Photos the worse it gets - not just editing issues. Working in an album after awhile if I click on an image for full page view, the image comes up and immediately shifts to others, dances around, won't move to next or previous image.....I can't believe Apple is not aware of this boondoggle. I guess everyone should keep badgering them.
