Turning on two factor authentication with no device

Hi,

I recently disabled two factor authentication on the apple website, i no longer have my iphone and want to continue using my emails on my other device (non apple)

Can an admin on here support enabling two factor authentication please as i need to generate an 'app specific password' - at the moment i cannot find any way of doing this using the articles on your website (it always asks me to use a device to enable this authentication method)

Thanks

Scott

You do want two-step verification, not two-factor authentication: 2-step can be set up from the link given in the Apple Help page I linked to, and does not need another Apple device, only a phone capable of receiving SMS messages. You say you were issued with a Recovery Key, so that means you have set up 2-step.

Apple say 'If you want to generate an app-specific password, sign in to your Apple ID account page. In the Security section, click Edit > Generate Password.'

Hi Roger

Thanks for the quick reply,

I've followed this process and have been issued a recovery key (wrote it down). I was then asked to enter my card details to verify...but it then back to the account settings page.

I thought it was instant and would allow me to generate an app specific password straight away.

So i have to wait for a few days, then go back into my apple id on the apple.com site, and i will see the two factor authentication enabled, and i'll be able to create an app specific password?

You can set up 2-step verification and use that to create an app-specific password (see link below) . Then go to http://appleid/apple.com , select 'Password and Security'; click 'Generate an App-Specific Password' and follow the instructions. Once you have the password, copy it and paste it into the password field in the application instead of your usual iCloud password. You should also keep a note of it (though you can generate a new one if required).

You will need to nominate a 'trusted device' - any phone capable of receiving SMS messages. There will be a 2-day wait before you can complete the process.

(A particular caveat (about 2-step only) - you will be issued with a 'Recovery Key' in case you lose your 'trusted device'. Make sure to write this down and keep it in a safe place; if you lose both it and your trusted device you will be permanently locked out of your ID. You'd be surprised at the number of people who've posted here that they've got themselves into just that position.)
