Congratulations Apple User Pop up won't go away

Ok, in the last 12 hours, I've posted this same issue on here three times (counting this one). I cannot find the question ANYWHERE. So here it goes again.

On my iPad with current IOS, every single time I click an article on Yahoo, I am presented with a pop up saying something like "Congratulations apple user, you've been chosen to win a $1000 Amazon gift card,"... and some other prizes if I answer some questions. This is obviously a scam. There is a "close" button, but any action I take redirects me to a site "free-award.com". I have tried everything I can find to stop this. I've deleted my history. Restarted my iPad. Tried to find help from the yahoo communities, but they're as helpful as Yahoo customer support. So last night I posted this question here. When I tried to follow up, I couldn't find the post. So I did it again. This morning, tried to follow up. Couldn't find the post, so I'm posting again (#3). So really this is a double question. How do I rid myself of this instrusion, and why do my posts keep disappearing?

I am seeing the same problem

on multiple websites (CNN, FOX News, local television stations, etc). I have tried clearing history and data to no avail. I have tried multiple WiFi networks and LTE; it happens on all of them and does not seem to be network related. I have an iPhone 6s on iOS 11.2.1. Seems to happen either when I open safari, or when I touch the screen to scroll (but before I actually start scrolling). Very annoying, indeed.

In Settings / Safari, enable:

block pop-ups

prevent cross-site tracking

ask websites not to track me

fraudulent website warning

If you still have this issue, you may want to install Adblock Plus. It is a free adblocker.

After installing it, you will need to enable it in Settings / Safari / content blockers.

Another option (work around) is to install the Adblock web browser.

Hi Chris.

I've never encountered this or had an end user report this issue. I have been using and supporting iPads since 2012 (iOS 5.0.x). I also use several web browsers on my iPads and iPhones. I use Safari, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Adblock (ad-free viewing). I used to use Mercury and Mercury Pro (now pulled from the App store so I couldn't reinstall it after wiping and/or setting up new devices recently.

Linus, what types of web sites have you been visiting (that are installing malware on your devices)? I have never had a popup on an iPhone or iPad. Not even once. I am not counting accidentally clicking on an ad in the TuneIn Radio app.

I can't think of the last time that I saw a popup on a Mac. I can't even remember when. Definitely not this either year on either of my 2 Macs. Maybe once since last summer. Maybe not.

I have used an iPhone for maybe 8 years.

I have used a Mac since the all-in-one Mac with the Chicklet keyboard. I have owned a Mac since before macOS 6.0.8 (maybe 25 years).

I install the adblock plus web browser in every web browser on my personal computer and my work computers. I can't even remember the last time that I saw a popup on my Windows 10 computer.

I have the same issue as everyone else here. Typically pops up browsing yahoo news articles but have had it happen on other mainstream news sites as well. Been through all the recommendations here with the exception of installing Adblock which will be my next attempt. This has persisted through two iPads and also occurs on an iPhone.

I have found when I block all cookies in safari, the problem goes away. However, cookies must be enabled for so many websites to function, that it’s impossible to keep them off permanently. The amazon popup consistently comes up when I navigate to weather.com so it’s not any particular site, only those that require you to have cookies enabled. I’ve sent apple my issue and have not heard back. Hope this is resolved soon!
