iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

I replaced the battery today, and I have to report that my iPhone 6 plus is snappy and quite responsive. Testing determined that the battery was "bad" with ~35% wear. The techs at Sprint were skeptical that replacing the battery would help, but so far, it's been a worthwhile spend. Will post more in a day or two. Early today, before replacing the battery, the phone was degraded to the point that folks on the other end of my calls couldn't hear me. That was the last straw! Chin up, and fingers crossed.

Same here. OnePlus is the next viable option. I have to get rid of apple music, all paid and subscribe apps. A big ask & significant effort but it is the way forward. And I promise not to return back here. 😢

Just for others who are endless optimistic about Apple,😍 try iOS 11.2 beta. It has produced some promising results without replacing battery

So when is Apple going to remove the "Solved" marking on this post? At best it is misleading, at worst it is a lie.

I've now reset my iPhone 6 three times, conducted an Apple hardware diagnostic (all passed) and conducted a complete factory reset - all at Apple's suggestion. The factory reset was suggested because the last Apple rep I spoke with admitted that some of the 11.x updates that Apple pushed out were not installing correctly. Really? Which ones? Why haven't they told us? But why would they?

Yesterday's factory reset installed ver 11.2. This process caused me to dump all my saved texts, phone history, etc. and freed up more space, though I didn't really need it. Now with all that time invested in finding a solution to this Apple-created problem (3-4 hours), most apps show a faster reaction time. HOWEVER... my phone app is still very slow and freezes and messaging is still slow to react and types really slow. Again, I assert that these IOS updates are and integral part of Apple's business growth model through planned device obsolescence. This isn't rocket science - just corporate deception on a grand scale.

Thanks, really informative and IMO confirms what we have been saying all along; namely, that this upgrade was not meant for iPhone 6 or 6S. I haven't measured the response times but anecdotally i can say that even after I downloaded iOS 11.2 opening app times are considerably slower, typing response time is noticeably delayed and functionality downgraded.

And one other thought. Many have suggested that to improve performance, we should remove much of our music, apps, photos and whatnot to free up space. So please tell me, why did I replace my flip phone with a smartphone?

No computing devices can work properly if they are close to being filled with data!

iOS needs an absolute minimum of 2-3 GBs of free data storage space to function nominally or with near average performance.

If an iDevice can maintain closer 4 GBs, or so, iOS performance should return to more normal, expected levels.

Many users run their computers and mobile devices down to the point where the operating systems have NO amount of data space to function properly!

Also, mobile devices have limited RAM.

Users who leave scads and scads of apps in the Background app switcher that are still running active in the background and constantly grabbing up to date data from the Internet, eats of RAM, CPU cycles and other resources, like your battery.

AND to add insult to injury if you leave a web browser open with scads and scads of active website tabs, ths eats into RAM and CPU cycles and another hit on battery life!

So, it’s important to not max out available hardware, software and data storage resources of any computing device!

A) I have roughly 30 out of 60 gbs unused;

B) I rarely leave more than 2 or 3 apps open in the background and I am very methodical about closing them as well as shutting down my phone at least once a week;

C) I do not leave my web browser open after using;

D) I tested my battery with one of the suggested apps (which I then deleted) and they showed good remaining life.

So again, with all the apps I have, I have ample unused space and I do not allow the apps or web browser to remain open and running in the background and my battery is within reasonable limits. Yet I experience significant lag in opening apps, in their response times and most noticeably in the reaction and response times of typing and iMessage.

No, I don't think that's the issue. The only reasonable remaining explanation is that the iOS updates have created these previously non-existent issues.

You’re making an awful lot of assumptions there, where is your evidence that most people do that? I certainly don’t and constantly have over 48 GB of capacity free. That has therefore not contributed in any way to the pure IOS 11 problems that I have had.

The 11.2 update has improved my iPhone 6 Plus no end. That is my hard evidence that the whole issue was unreliable and flawed software that should never have been made available to the ‘6’ range of phones until it had been properly tested.

All this nonsense about storage and batteries has nothing to do with the issues I had as everything worked perfectly on IOS 10 with the same Apps and storage levels. I rest my case and I wish people would stop blindly defending Apple when individuals know full well there was nothing wrong with their iPhones before this ‘upgrade’.

Running iOS11.2 on my iPhone 6 and it’s DEFINITELY VERY sluggish compared to iOS10. Non of the fixes proposed by Apple have worked, and I agree with the outraged expressed by so many people here.

Between iOS and OS, this is far from the first time this has happened to me - I’ve had countless Macs and several iPhones - but with this level of corporate greed and lack of ethics (not to mention massive tax avoidance in Europe), I will definitely be switching to Windows and Android in the near future. I never thought I’d say that, but Injust have.

francsalfrom had an interesting post about RAM on iPhone 6/6+ that is not viewable anymore. Is the problem with iPhone 6 that the iOS 11 requires more RAM than 1GB, as apparently 6s that has twice as much RAM doesn't seem to have the same problems with iOS 11. In that case, iPhone 6 users should be allowed to downgrade to iOS 10 or iOS11 adapted for less pyhsical memory.

iPad Air 1, iPad Mini 2 and 3 models all have 1 GB of RAM and those iDevices aren’t having major issues with a lot of user in these communities.

Like I keep emphasising, there are only a very small percentage/minorities of iDevice users having major issues with their iDevices with all tye different updates of iOS 11.

This is not a device-wide, worldwide issue effecting every single iOS 11 compatible iDevice and user.

I have a 1st gen iPad Pro and 6th gen iPod Touch (that only has 1 GB of RAM and has near the same hardware specs as an iPhone 6 without the actual phone part) and both devices have been running every single version of iOS 11 without major performance slow downs, lags or delays.

The only major problems I have been having is photo syncing issues with Photos on iOS/macOS/OS X and syncing issues with iTunes 12.6.3 with both of my iDevices.

Other than this, I have not had a bad experience with iOS 11.

So, all reports coming into the support communities are not typical of all users and devices.

iDevice users who are NOT having problems with their iDevices don’t post in a product technical support community.
