iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

Many apps unresponsive. Phone also running extremely warm and battery draining very quickly. Turning off background app refresh makes no difference whatsoever. Hard reset has no effect. I have 78GB free.

It dosen’t check for integrity on the iSP side of things, just on Apple’s end.

Well,

I am NOT having any major issues with iOS 11 and I DO believe it is because I use the iTunes method every single time.

Some users sware the WiFi method consistently works for them, too.

I will kindly have to agree to disagree with this assessment.

MichelPM: First, for unknown reasons, I am unable to access your responses or comments from the notifying email that I receive. Second, I have made numerous posts to the Apple Support page describing the issues I have encountered with iOS 11, including all the various suggested steps listed in this thread that haven't resulted in a more than 1 or 2 day fix, and hopefully asking that Apple re-sign iOS 10. I know, I am hoping against hope, but right now my phone causes untold frustration and that will remain with me when my phone really does die and I go shopping for a new one.

Oh, and one other thing. Your remark re: wifi updating. In the end, even though an update were to be done through iTunes, ultimately I would venture to say that almost all of us ultimately connect to our ISP through wifi (think laptop) rather than a hard connection. So I am not sure whether your suggestion is either possible in many cases, or a probable cause of alleged corruption of the packets.

francsalfrom had an interesting post about RAM on iPhone 6/6+ that is not viewable anymore. Is the problem with iPhone 6 that the iOS 11 requires more RAM than 1GB, as apparently 6s that has twice as much RAM doesn't seem to have the same problems with iOS 11. In that case, iPhone 6 users should be allowed to downgrade to iOS 10 or iOS11 adapted for less pyhsical memory.

Yeah, apparently Apple does not like what I have to say here. Two posts in a row deleted. Maybe touching some raw nerves with my comments.

That wasn't a good video to post because from what I just watched in that video, that iPhone 6 was running pretty goram well on iOS 11.2

If this is what all the iPhone 6 users here are, typically, experiencing, then gimme a break!

The iPhone 6 in that video was running pretty well on iOS 11.2

If this is the amount of “lag and delay” everyone in this post is all in a hissy fit about, then everyone here needs to get a reality check!

I saw NO MAJOR, MAJOR performance slowdowns or lag!

Some minor delay from iOS 10 to 11, which I would expect from upgrading to a more “powerful”, new and MAJOR iOS upgrade, but NOTHING like users here are describing in these couple of iPhone 6/6S threads.

Come on...

Must agree.

I do know this is a minority of users who simply want to sound off vs taking the time to maintain their devices, etc.

Most will utilize the resources and tools given and in turn, thoroughly enjoy their iPhone 6's even with issues experienced prior to updating. They seem to put that aside and focus on going forward instead.

I just got a new phone & am already deleting things and backing them up elsewhere to prevent any issues to the best of my ability.

I do this with all of my devices

Just like to say that I'm glad for those who are now pleased once again with their devices since the update.

Cheers!

I beg to differ about maintenance of the phone. My i6 still takes 5 secs to have the camera app be in ready state from the lock screen. It has 32 of 64Gb free. There are no background apps running. Even if there are, iOS is supposed to managed the apps running. It is not a slight slow down. The point is that iOS 11 was released (nowadays as usual) with tons of bugs - a major which causes so much slow down, and now I am really skeptical about taking the 11.2 until there's proof that it is not another rushed released full of bugs. I know we live in an agile software release world, but in the 2 months since its release, Apple has to release 7 version of fixes, is poor quality control. And still by current reports 11.2 seems to be bringing its own sets of problems. Slow down is one thing in the 11.1.1 that I am stuck with, but at least I don't have a battery drain problem.

C'mon why every year we have to go through this whenever a new iOS is released? iOS is supposed to be "the most amazing OS out there". Apple devices are supposed to be good enough that non-techie users should get joys using it without 'maintenance'.

I am not willing to upgrade any further until it stabilizes. My mistake for thinking, "It should be ok". No its not, and you cannot backout the upgrade even to the immediate release prior. That is the major issue.

I guess i spoke too soon. My advise to all who are not at ios 11.2 yet..stay put where you are till and if Apple fixes it in their next version. Hopefully soon!

Was reluctant to upgrade to 11.2 after facing all the issues with 11.1, but when I read that 11.2 will fix it i went ahead and updated. first 2...3 days i was thrilled as it looked like my iphone 6 was fixed. But 5 days later i again see the lag starting. i am sure its getting worse! I can go and buy a Galaxy S8 today but want to wait till march for S9. So now i have 4 months of suffering and pain to go through with this half dead phone or ios!
Thank you Apple!

Hi elp,

Sorry to hear that 😟

Regarding the Galaxy 9, I just got the 8+ and was assured I would get VoLTE coverage but the device doesn't support it. I found out the S5 and S6 do but beyond that, no. So, just a head's up on that. Your carrier may offer by then but definitely check to see if the S9 will/if the device itself supports it (mine has LTE but that's not the same & my phone never picks up LTE regardless), as I was quite angered when I had to find out after the fact, especially when I specifically stated I needed this coverage and they assured me I would have it with the S8+

It's rare that I'm able to use my phone as a phone. I think Sprint may offer one that supports VoLTE however

- I've had luck with my iPhone with call completion, reliant on cellular only, but I use it in a different location and rely on 4g which works great in that zip code and surrounding area (same carrier)

- I really like both phones overall however and use one for work, the other for personal.

I just wanted to share this with you in case coverage (GOOD coverage such as VoLTE) and holding a call is important to you as well as processing data of any type.

Take care ~

This about Galaxy sounds a bit off-topic, but anyway ... are you using an MVNO or a major carrier? You said you are not able to get LTE which is very strange. Usually this happens when you use an MVNO. The phone then doesn't know how to set the APN settings, and usually you need to do it manually. See: https://bestmvno.com/apn-settings/

Also, MVNOs usually cannot do VoLTE or VoWifi. I've confirmed that with AT&T, TMO. MVNOs are cheap, but that's the trade-off: LTE OK. VoLTE, VoWifi no.

Dec 8, 2017 1:23 PM in response to Durianwool

Lol, it does but I felt I had to let him know what happened to me, to my great surprise.

I use Tmobile...definitely a major carrier. Sr tech told me VoLTE as advertised isn't supported on the newest Galaxy devices but is on the iPhones.

I have lte/4g/3g option checked but it's a big deal if I get 4g at home and surrounding area. It's not picked up LTE. I'm essentially reliant on WiFi calling which is also unreliable....

But, looks like I'm stuck with it

Dec 8, 2017 2:20 PM in response to liv0123

Inability to support VoWifi (Wifi Calling) is a common problem as the phones need to have the OS support baked in, AND certified by the carrier. VoLTE not so much, but still the same - the carrier need to certify it. In time, your high-end phone is likely going to be certified for it. Galaxy S9 doesn't seem to be on the list, eventhough iPhone X has appeared on this list http://www.spectrumgateway.com/compatible-phones#t-mobile

HOWEVER, having a high-end phone and not able to receive LTE, and thus without LTE, you cannot do VoLTE (and VoLTE is a prereq for VoWifi), is not right. If it is a US, and carrier bought phone, then you should get it returned and fixed. Unless of course you do not have a data plan, which then becomes a bigger problem trying to get your account fixed. LTE nowadays is 'basic' service, and it is just not right that you're not getting LTE on your phone, and subscribed to the big 4 (ATT, TMO, Vz, Sprint).
