iPhone 6 very slow with IOS 11 update

After receiving IOS 11.01.1 on my MGCT2LL/A1522 (iPhone 6), my phone is super slow. Apps hang, then close (like the Starbucks app), my purchased music would just stop in the middle of a song, then I had to close the app and re-open.

In general, everything is very slow to respond, and I have rebooted twice.

Any suggestions

HERE'S THE FIX: Go into Settings> General> Reset> Reset All Settings (this will reset iOS settings, won't touch your apps)

WHAT THIS DOES: This will *not* erase your phone, but will reset most of the things you can adjust in settings on iOS (you'll need to re-enter you wifi, adjust notifications and privacy settings again, reset your default account for Calendar and Notes, etc, but all your email accounts and iCloud account will still be logged in and all working).

FIXES THIS ISSUE: I had the same issue: iPhone 6S. Upgraded. Even with 25GB free, I'd press a button and often have to wait 1-3 seconds for a response, or copy and paste selectors would be really slow to appear, even the keyboard was unresponsive... phone was barely unusable, literally. I think most people don't get it because most who updated to iOS 11 noticed it being a little slower but not 90% slower. Those like us need to take this step.

BACKGROUND: When I was scouring I found that erasing your phone and restoring from backup worked for people on Reddit, and that should be reliable. I was in the process of doing that myself and accidentally chose "reset all settings" instead of "erase all content and settings". My phone rebooted and all my apps are fine, just needed to go through iOS settings and readjust things.

ALTERNATIVES: This is obviously better than either (a) downgrading to iOS 10 or (b) making sure your phone (as it is now on iOS11) is backed up to iCloud, erasing it, and restoring from that backup.

The difference in speed is shocking.

Pretty sure this will work for you too.

So after a week of trying out the info supplied by Serolio, and applying IOS 3, I can say that the iPhone 6 Plus has improved no end, so thanks for that - very helpful, but completely illogical, considering I set the phone up with both backups and as a new iPhone - so completely weird.

It is still shocking that they released this version of IOS without proper testing, but thanks for the suggestion and I would also advise others to try the 'reset all settings'.

11.1 Beta has made a big difference for me

After doing a reset and then restoring from backup from iTunes I noticed marginal improvement for a number of days. However, my phone eventually started having the same problems as before. Running hot, apps hanging for ages, swipe gesture not registering (the most annoying bug by far). So I decided to try joining the beta.

Took ages to install but I have a marked improvement in the functionality of my iPhone 6 Plus. Of course not as fast as when I bought it, can't expect that of a 3+ year old device. I have been noticing a progressive slowing of performance since last year. As expected. But, so far 11.1 Beta has made my phone much more usable and responsive.

Will update after a few more days of use.

Have you tried re-installing those apps you deleted, one at a time, testing the iPhone 6 for awhile as you go?

That would pin down what apps were causing the issues.

Also, it is very good to maintain, AT THE VERY LEAST, 3-4 GBs of free data storage space!

Don’t ever let your iDevices start dipping below 2-3 GBs of free data storage space, too!

iOS or any computer operating system needs a certain percentage of free data storage space to operate nominally and properly.

You don’t need a new iPhone IF you don’t load up your iDevice to the point where it no longer operates properly.

Also, anyone with 16 GBs iDevice only REALLY have 8-9 GBs, or so, of real, usable free data storage space.

FYI for everyone here in this thread post.

In addition to all of the possible fixes and solutions presented another iPhone 6S user, in another single posting here,

suggested to go into Settings, General, Accessibility, Increase Contrast and turn ON Reduce Transparency.

Your iPhone 6/6S won’t look as pretty, but that user reported that his iPhone 6/6S speed improved considerably.

In addition, I have been advising in the Settings app, under General, turning ON Reduced Motion.

Good Luck to ALL!

Uh, IdrisSeabright - there are 24 pages ⚠ of complaints on this one issue since this update was released in October. That's one heck of a coincidence. Time to step back and get some perspective. Either there is an Apple-created software issue which needs to be fixed or they sell more batteries and/or phones. It's pretty easy math.

That's about average after any update. Here's a thread with 853 pages, 13,000 posts and 2.6 million views. It was about a real problem 5 years ago. Back when there were only 1/10 the number of iPhones in use. Today that thread would be 8,000 pages if the problem was the same.

Your phone needs a new battery. Arguing about it won't change that fact.

I kinda tend to agree with others, here.

Shouldn't L-ion batteries in iDevices last more than 2-3 years?

Maybe. Maybe not. I spent twenty years in the cellular industry. I saw batteries die in less than a year. I saw batteries that last for five or six or more years. In my experience, after two years, it's always worthing considering a failing battery as a cause of issues. Given the number of iPhone 6 models sold, I'd say there's going to be not insignificant cohort starting to see battery failures around now.

Worth a read. It addresses the reality of the situation and ways to help:

"Apple has another big release that takes place today. That’s right, iOS 11 will be released to the public on Tuesday, and hundreds of millions of iOS devices around the world will instantly have access to it. Thankfully, iOS isn’t like Android where people have to wait months before they can actually install new updates.

iOS 11 is packed full of new features, enhancements, and behind-the-scenes tweaks that combine to dramatically improve the iPhone and iPad experience. Of course, iOS 11 also has some changes that people won’t appreciate, and a potential slowdown on your iPhone is likely at the top of the list. Don’t worry though, because in this post we’ll give you a few different ways to speed things back up..."

"First things first: after you update your iPhone to iOS 11, don’t panic. Your phone is going to slow down and your battery life will take a hit for at least a day or two as your phone re-indexes. After that, you’ll see a marked improvement in speed and battery life… probably.

Where speed is concerned, some older iPhone models will never run as fast on iOS 11 as they did with iOS 10 installed. Efficiency improvements in upcoming iOS 11 updates could help things down the road, but right now you’re stuck. That said, there are a few things you can do to speed your phone back up if the slowdown starts to get to you..."
