High Sierra Destroys FAT32

So I upgraded two of my computers on the day High Sierra was released. Then, today, I upgrade a third computer to High Sierra. It's a Mac Mini. I didn't have enough space on the Mac Mini, so I copied some of my movies to a FAT32 formatted external hard drive to free up some space. Then I installed it.

My primary computer is a MacBook Pro with Retina display, released in 2013. Just today, all of a sudden I noticed that I could not copy a 2 GB file to my external hard drive (it's a 2 TB drive, with about 800 GB of free space). I noticed that this same thing happened on the other computer I had upgraded on High Sierra's release - an iMac.

When I had regular Sierra installed, I had no problems copying files between 1 GB and 4 GB to the hard drive (I am aware of the limitations of FAT32. All of the files I am attempting to copy are well below 4 GB).

I have an old Windows laptop that has no problems copying 2 GB files to the hard drive, so it's not the drive's format. I cannot reformat the hard drive. I had no problems using it before High Sierra, so I shouldnt have to. I am not concerned with spelling or punctuation at this time, as i'm close to having a nervous breakdown right nwo. Reformatting the drive is out of the questions, as I have too much important data on it.

I'm glad they're aware of the problem. For now, my only solution is to use a third party file manager. The one I'm using is Commander One, and it copied the files with no problems.

An interesting thing happened - I was able to use Unarchiver to extract the large file onto the hard drive.

I followed earlier advice and customized Archive Utility to uncompress files to the USB Fat32 drive. You can find it under Applications/Utilities on High Sierra. Once you launched it, go into Archive Utility > Preferences and choose your drive under the "Save Expanded Files:". Once your USB Fat32 drive is selected, go to File > Expand Archive and find your archived file...it will uncompress to the USB drive with no issue, assuming its uncompressed file size is 4GB or less.

To be honest, Apple being aware of a bug seems to mean nothing these days, because 5 months passed and they did nothing. They are aware of a lot of issues and do nothing about them (like the issue with Sierra, High Sierra and the infamous external monitor problem affecting a ton of people - no fix since years! Anyway, using a third party file manager helps temporarily with this problem.

So, how many months in with this new OS and no solution for this problem?

This feels like a d&¢k move from a company we all love, to force new tech down it's users throats, i don't believe some programmer at apple HQ just made a mistake and inadvertently changed the limits on the file format.

This is not a bug, otherwise it would be random, i have 3 apple computers, MB air, mac mini and a mb pro, and this issue is present on all three. i don't want 3rd party software to manage my files, i want a proper patch from the company i trusted to fix this. It is a shame that apple has not addressed this problem sooner.

I am thinking of jumping ship as well whoever is in charge has let the quality of apple fall so far behind now. I used to be a strong supporter of apple and willing to pay a premium for a quality product. It now apple products are not quality anyone. They spend more money on image than the quality of their products. When I upgrade I will not be upgrading with apple unless their quality improves significantly

well this may have been said before but since the death of steve jobs i felt this is the way Apple's products would go

eventually just look at the changes with product lines and beta testing etc etc....Apple cannot sustain selling premium priced products while not giving premium quality as people will eventually get tired and move on and Apple will eventually be just another tec company with the likes of Samsung and Microsoft taking first position.

Apple is moving further away from the company it once was when under Steve Jobs.

2 days i have had a brand new 15" 2017 MacBook pro (higher spec one) in its box and still not sure if to return it....

they cannot keep removing functionality and expect people to keep paying more for less......
