High Sierra Destroys FAT32

So I upgraded two of my computers on the day High Sierra was released. Then, today, I upgrade a third computer to High Sierra. It's a Mac Mini. I didn't have enough space on the Mac Mini, so I copied some of my movies to a FAT32 formatted external hard drive to free up some space. Then I installed it.

My primary computer is a MacBook Pro with Retina display, released in 2013. Just today, all of a sudden I noticed that I could not copy a 2 GB file to my external hard drive (it's a 2 TB drive, with about 800 GB of free space). I noticed that this same thing happened on the other computer I had upgraded on High Sierra's release - an iMac.

When I had regular Sierra installed, I had no problems copying files between 1 GB and 4 GB to the hard drive (I am aware of the limitations of FAT32. All of the files I am attempting to copy are well below 4 GB).

I have an old Windows laptop that has no problems copying 2 GB files to the hard drive, so it's not the drive's format. I cannot reformat the hard drive. I had no problems using it before High Sierra, so I shouldnt have to. I am not concerned with spelling or punctuation at this time, as i'm close to having a nervous breakdown right nwo. Reformatting the drive is out of the questions, as I have too much important data on it.

i see where this is heading.....as it's moving off topic 😉

the issue with the FAT32 is only minor i have a work around... somehow got off discussion.

i have a 2014 mackbook pro and its perfect and still immaculate i was looking into a new one like i do every 3 years so i was looking at windows alternatives (something i don't normally do) or wait for a 2018 MacBook Pro machine.

Although i have been using Apple MacBooks for years and i think there great i still have a powerbook from 2006 working fine....but slow obviously but its been reliable and a Mackbook Pro 2008 i still own and works.

my partner bought me the mid 2017 and i will be giving her the 2014 machine its only had about 20 battery cycles 😉 with 97 health and still mint condition.

i just heard of many many issues with the 2016 rev i like the new space grey version though.

To be honest, Apple being aware of a bug seems to mean nothing these days, because 5 months passed and they did nothing. They are aware of a lot of issues and do nothing about them (like the issue with Sierra, High Sierra and the infamous external monitor problem affecting a ton of people - no fix since years! Anyway, using a third party file manager helps temporarily with this problem.

well its just the way it is with apple they seem to fix strange bugs i never encounter i mean i had a MacBook with flickering display must have been 2 to 3 year at least of complaining nothing was done i then bought a newer model a few week after there was an update for this older model and it sure did.... fixed it the whole life i had it flickering at low brightness then out of nowhere tim cook issued the update 😕

regarding the finder issue on fat32 i have a work around now so no biggie but i wish apple would confirm it's a bug within finder of high sierra

anyhow my recently purchased 2017 model about I've had about a month so far i like it and the keyboard is great 😮

although i wish i could disable the touch bar as i worry about burn I'm still getting used to it...

my 2014 machine is still running great but again the fat32 bug is the same with high sierra.

sorry for going off topic! I'm having fun with my new machine!

Apple haven't cut the file size because you can save files >2GB (and <4GB) to USB drives using the cp command in Terminal.

What is WRONG (when you try using Finder to copy files) is that:

1) the error message says that the EXTERNAL drive's format does not support files of this size, when it clearly DOES

2) The files will not copy via Finder.

This is sloppy coding by Apple (again). Something that is becoming ever increasingly common with MacOS updates.

The main problem is that not enough users can be bothered to file a FEEDBACK on these errors, and just put up with it.

*sigh*

If they're aware of the issue (like all of the vulnerabilities in iOS a couple of years back), then Apple is really staying true to their horrible methodology.

I've been an Apple user for over a decade - and I gotta tell ya - I'm slowly drifting away from Apple.

Like, not to rant or anything; but c'mon. How in the **** does it make sense that this "bug" has been around for 5+ months, and no fix?

I'm honestly convinced that Apple is trying to weed out potential cross-platform users...lol.

Why else would they change their entire branding (Mac OS X > macOS), force an unnecessary upgrade for Sierra users, AND change the format from HFS+ (which they have had for EVER), to APFS?

Apple has become a joke - trying to keep up with Microsoft - hanging onto the iPhone for dear life.

Boo Apple.

Boo.

Hi Adam, how did you get 10.13.4? I have a brand new macbook pro 512GB with emoji bar, and it has 10.13.1. I cant find a way to update it. If I go to Apple in top left-> about this mac->Software updates, there are only updates for things like iMove, keynote and pages - apps I never use and will probably delete when I get time. There is nothing for the OS.

Where do you get OS updates from?
