The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10 AND iOS 11.

They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.

Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?

Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3 and 4 have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.

Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.

Plus, the iPad 2 and 3 are the only two supported models left that use the much outdated 30 pin dock connector.

The same iPad 2 users who whined and moaned and groaned that both iOS 8 and 9 slowed down the performance of their iPad 2 models would come back, once again, in angry droves, with even more complaints of slowdowns under iOS 10 or iOS 11.

FYI,

Just because your iPad 2 is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean your iPad 2 is suddenly useless.

Your iPad 2 will work as it always has and the apps you have installed on it will continue to update and receive some level of app updates relevent to your current iOS.

You have had four years of iOS upgrades and updates.

Your iPad 2 will still do everything it does now and you will, get, at least, another full year, perhaps two, if you decide you want to wait longer to get a new or newer iPad model.

Your iPad 2 is NOT, suddenly, becoming obsolete or useless.

So, your options are really keep using your iPad 2 or purchase a new iPad if you feel you need or want to.

Your current iPad 2 will still work and continue to receive app updates until sometime through this Fall 2017, when, with the recent introduction of iOS 11, ALL support for older 32 bit iDevices and any iOS 32 bit apps will come to a final end.

Your iPad 2 will still work and function as it always has, but will no longer receive any more app updates after the Fall of 2017.

The final app updates your iPad 2 will receive will be its last!

Your iPad 2 should STILL be receiving app updates, currently, but look for this to end sometime soon.

This is why Apple introduced the new, lower cost 2017 iPad 5 model, in April

Apple is trying to get older iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen Mini iPad users to upgrade to more modern iPad hardware in anticipation of the recent introduction/release of iOS 11, which WILL render all older 32 bit iDevices obsolete.

If the apps you want to install do not still support iOS 9.3.5, OR brand new apps that ONLY supoort iOS 10/11, then there is nothing you can do!

I have 4-5 apps that I cannot upgrade to the latest iOS 10/11 versions, but the versions still on my iPad 2 and 3 models still work fine!

As I keep telling users, older iPads still work with the apps they have.

Your older iPad, like mine, IS STILL receiving app updates, currently, for many of your already installed apps!

You just won’t be able to use new apps that now may require iOS 10/11.

It is entirely up to to you to keep using the iPad you have a get a new one.

Eventually, you will have to/need to replace that older iPad as developers will continue to end support for older 32-bit iDevices and older 32-bit software that work with them.

iPad 2 and 3/4 models are going on 6-7 years old, now.

Apple offers the new 2017 iPad 5 as their cheapest iPad model, ever.

So, these decisions are entirely up to you.

Not true.

All the apps I have on my iPad 2 that have NOT been updated, the older versions STILL work as they always did.

And to date, about 90% of the apps on my iPad are STILL being updated, on iOS 9.3.5, on a daily basis.

What older apps, that haven’t been updated, are you referring to that are no longer working, at all, on your iPad 3?

Regardless of newer versions of apps, the older versions should still be working on your iPad 3.

And what do you mean about installing apps?

Some apps (especially brand new apps designed especiaaly for iOS 10 and 11) can now be iOS 10 or 11 only, now.

However, app developers may decide leave the older versions of their previous older app versions on Apple’s app servers, if they choose to.

IF you own a computer with an older version of iTunes already on it, try using that version.

If you have a computer, but NO iTunes on it, here is a link to the older 12.6.3 version for download found in this Apple weblink.

DO NOT download the latest version of iTunes (version 12.7.x) as there is no more support for saving apps in iTunes under the most recent versions.

Then, back on your iPad , you can try to download the latest app from the iOS App Store and if the developer/s has/have left an older, compatible version of their app/s on Apple's app servers, then you will receive a small window pop-up prompt that states that there is an older version of the app that is compatible with your device.. Would you like to download this version now.

Tap the OK button just below the prompt.

FYI

Not every app may have an older version to download as this is strictly up to the app developer to decide or not to leave an older version of their app/s on Apple’s app servers.

You are not entirely correct in saying older apps that worked with 9.3.5 still work on older iPads. As soon as you download the latest update for that app you might find it starts playing up. I found this with Words with friends. I

have just updated the app as requested and it stopped opening new games. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app but was told the app now only works with iOS 10 and above! So it's goodbye to Words which I actually paid for!

Nov 19, 2017 11:08 AM in response to Mr Rochester

Did you try to redownload Words with Friends to see if the developer left the, older, compatible version on Apple’s App Store servers?

What happens/happened when you tried this?

This happens sometimes.

App developers aren’t obligated to leave older versions of their apps on Apple’s App Store servers.

Many app developer’s do leave their older versions up, many developers do not.

This is one of the reasons NOT to remove older apps off older iDevices, just in case the app or its older version has been removed from Apple’s App Stores servers.

Also, Apple, itself, is doing thinning of the iOS App Store by removing old 32-bit apps that haven’t been issued updates in quite some time.

So, the end of 32-bit apps is starting to happen.

Nov 19, 2017 12:49 PM in response to MichelPM

The Apple App Store has only Words with Friends 2 and that requires iOS 10 and above. That's what is says when I try to download it. Yes, I now regret uninstalling the app I had but the old app would not start any new games and doing a reinstall often fixes odd and unexpected situations like this. Had I been forewarned that Zynga were abandoning iOS 9.3.5 I would have kept the old app. But, then again, it was playing up, so I was in a catch 22 situation! It is a pity technology companies dont treat their users with a little more respect by informing them that they are no longer supporting their devices!

As I stated some apps will be going all iOS 10 and/or 11, now.

With older iPad models, app updates will get fewer and fewer, but the apps that will be left on these older iDevices should still work.

I have a 1st gen iPad 1 with over 100 apps, many older versions of the most current app versions I use now on my newer iPad models and those older app versions all still work!

Even video apps, like YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix AND Hulu all still work!

I can even still rent or purchase iTunes video content on my 2010 iPad!!!
