Yahoo email not working in mail app with iOS 11

My yahoo email is not updating the inbox after I upgraded to iOS 11.0.1. The junk (spam) email still works but not the inbox. I have removed it and rebooted several times. The yahoo mail app works fine but I do not want to use it permanently. Any thoughts?

I've been having this issue for the last two iOS updates so I find it hard to believe it's a Yahoo! issue. Something Apple changes seems to be causing issues with the ability to get email. Not Happy!

Most efficient solution is to delete the account and re-add it with the appropriate settings. This is after making sure the Yahoo servers are working properly first:

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.

Add your account again.

Using app-specific passwords

App-specific passwords allow you to sign in to your account securely when you use third-party apps with your Apple ID.

App-specific passwords are single-use passwords for your Apple ID that let you sign in to your account and securely access the information you store in iCloud from a third-party app. For example, use app-specific passwords with Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or other mail, contacts, and calendar services not provided by Apple. App-specific passwords maintain a high level of security and help ensure your Apple ID password won’t be collected or stored by any third-party apps you use.

To generate and use app-specific passwords, your Apple ID must be protected with two-factor authentication.

You also need an app-specific password for your devices that use Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and earlier or iOS 5 and earlier. If you don’t have devices that can be updated to iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan, you can set up two-step verification and generate app-specific passwords.

Generate an app-specific password

  1. Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
  2. In the Security section, click Generate Password below App-Specific Passwords.
  3. Follow the steps on your screen.

After you generate your app-specific password, enter or paste it into the password field of the app as you would normally.

Manage app-specific passwords

You can have up to 25 active app-specific passwords at any given time. If you need to, you can revoke passwords individually or all at once.

  1. Sign in to your Apple ID account page.
  2. In the Security section, click Edit.
  3. In the App Specific Passwords section, click View History.
  4. Click User uploaded file next to a password you want to delete, or Revoke All.

After you revoke a password, the app using that password will be signed out of your account until you generate a new password and sign in again.

Any time you change or reset your primary Apple ID password, all of your app-specific passwords are revoked automatically to protect the security of your account. You'll need to generate new app-specific passwords for any apps that you want to continue using.

I am not sure what the root cause is. I'm sure it has something to do with the changes Apple has made and how Yahoo interacts with the native Apple email app. Several of the Yahoo moderators on the support site reference a Yahoo issue and will "send it to the engineers", whatever that means. I will say, a day after I created the support ticket on the Yahoo Community site, it started working for me again. I have also read where several people have multiple Yahoo accounts where only some of them were not working. So, long story short, if I had to guess, it is an issue between how both Apple's native email app and the Yahoo account are configured. Good luck!

Getting same here. Has only just started happening today actually. I can receive mail to my Yahoo account. But when I send I receive an error saying - ‘cannot send email. The useneme or password for Yahoo AU is incorrect’. Options are OK or settings. I go to settings and everything looks correct. There is nowhere to re-enter password.

I tried removing account & re-adding. Details and password are accepted when adding account. But I get the same error when trying to send. Same on iPhone and iPad. No problems accessing or using my Yahoo Mail on a computer browser.

Could it be something to do with iOS 11’s new ‘App & Website Passwords’? Saying that it has been okay for me up until today & I updated to iOS 11 a while ago now. Have done an incremental update since though. Something must have screwed it up! :-/

I had the same error message that the account was already added. I had to delete the account, reboot the phone, and add the account again. Then it took.

But it didn’t resolve the main issue which is Yahoo’s recent inability to send messages from the native mail app. Incoming messages arrive fine, but I can’t send a thing. Despite the incoming messages, that iPhone error message about having the wrong user name or password for the yahoo account persists and is maddening.

Gmail is fine and this may be the thing that finally pushes me to drop Yahoo. The last thing I need is another single-site app on my phone.

Although the solution is not ideal, today I solved the "no Yahoo mail since November 2017" problem with my wife's iPhone 6 / iOS 11.2.2. Here's what I did:

I dragged the Apple iOS Mail icon out of the bottom "tray" of the home screen and then dragged the Yahoo Mail app into the "tray." My wife now has a functional Yahoo mail app nestled between the Safari icon and the Messages icon. And the iOS Mail app now sits as a useless drone on the home screen among the lesser apps like Home, Weather, Stocks, etc. and will remain there until Apple or Yahoo fix the problem.

User uploaded file

By the way, based on responses I got from Yahoo when trying to delete and then re-setup the Yahoo account, I suspect the problem has something to do with Yahoo mail interpreting Apple's iOS Mail app as an insecure, ie, not a "modern" app.

Just been playing around with this some more... I deleted the account (again) but when I re-installed it, instead of choosing the preset "yahoo" setup option l clicked "other", then manually set up the account using the following settings

incoming Server

Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port - 465
  • SSL - Yes

Now seems to be working and I have successfully sent and received emails

It think it's final done it. Thank you to everyone who contributed today...#nightmare.

Following everyone's input, here's a complete script rundown of what I did...I hope it works for you!

  • Firstly ‘delete’ the yahoo account from your device (iPhone or iPad)…

    Settings / Accounts & Passwords / Yahoo.co.uk / click delete account.

  • Now go to a main computer (Macbook or something) and go into Yahoo.com and log into your account. When you get to ‘Mail’, go to your ‘account info’ (normally done by clicking your name on top right of screen and clicking ‘Account Info’), and click ‘Account Security’ (NOTE, you may be required to enter your Yahoo log-in details again). On the feature that says ‘Allow apps that use less secure sign-in’, ensure the on/off toggle is set to ON. You can now close that window if you want to.
  • Now, g back to your iPad or iPhone….
    • Go to Settings / Accounts & Passwords / and click ‘ADD ACCOUNT’
    • DO NOT
    • Now click ‘Add Mail Account’
    • Enter the following details…
      • Name - Your name (example …Peter Edwards)
      • Email - peteredwards@yahoo.co.uk
      • Password - Enter your Yahoo password!!
      • Description - yahoo.co.uk
      • CLICK ‘NEXT’

Under INCOMING MAIL SERVER, enter

  • Host Name - imap.mail.yahoo.com
  • Username - peteredwards@yahoo.co.uk
  • Password - Enter your Yahoo password!!
  • Under OUTGOING MAIL SERVER, enter
    • Host Name - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Username - peteredwards@yahoo.co.uk
    • Password - Enter your Yahoo password!!
    • CLICK ‘NEXT’

  • After it’s finished ‘VERIFYING’, click ‘SAVE’.
  • Now go back to Settings / Accounts & Passwords / Yahoo.co.uk and click the line that says ‘Account peteredwards@yahoo.co.uk
  • Click on the line under ‘Outgoing Mail Server’ (which begins with SMTP).
  • Click on the line under ‘Primary Server’ (that starts with ‘smtp….’)
  • Ensure the ‘SERVER’ is toggled to ON
  • Ensure ‘Use SSL’ is toggled to ON
  • Ensure (or change if necessary) the ‘Server Port’ to 465
  • Click DONE…this will now ‘Verify’ again (this can take a little while)
  • NOW, click again, under ‘Outgoing Mail Server’ (which begins with SMTP).
  • Under the line that says ‘OTHER SMTP SERVERS’, click ‘Add Server’.
  • Enter the following details…
    • Host Name - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    • Username - peteredwards@yahoo.co.uk
    • Password - Enter your Yahoo password!!
    • Click ‘SAVE
    • Click ‘DONE’

NOTE - If you add Yahoo under “Other“ (as described above) rather than the Yahoo app, you only get the mail and not the contacts. If you want the Yahoo contacts you have to then go back and add under Yahoo as an account as well. But if you do this first deselect ‘mail’ otherwise you will be adding two inboxes. You would just add “contacts“ when you do it the second time.

Iphone6 11.2.2 - this was happening even before latest update

Same problem, totally erratic behavior - many different issues, I have 2 Yahoo Accts both different behavior, one acct will be working fine not other, then vice versa. Right now 1 Acct is working fine, other totally stopped, but both work fine in iPad- totally weird behavior:

  1. Mails vanish- somehow I last 6 months emails will vanish on the iphone, somehow they will slowly update back (it has happened many times)
  2. Mails dont update - sometimes over a day
  3. Calendar does not sync

Apple you need to look into this urgently - very critical problem

Jan 29, 2018 12:56 PM in response to Jeffkubec

I would like to share with everyone my solution to this problem, as I had been experiencing the exact same issue for the last few months. I have read through this entire thread and through everyone's comments. The following steps are guranteed to fix your problem:

1) Delete your current yahoo mail account on your iphone

settings

  • accounts & passwords
    • yahoo
      • delete account

2) Sign into your yahoo mail account from any computer (mail.yahoo.com)

Once signed in, go up to the top right corner and place the mouse icon over your name (in between the settings and the home icons,) and a window will pop up. Click on 'Account Info.'

  • On the top left corner, click the 'Account Security' icon
    • At the top, if you have your Yahoo Account Key enabled, YOU MUST DISABLE THE YAHOO ACCOUNT KEY
      • After disabling the Account Key, you will see multiple previously hidden options open up on the Account Security page. At the very bottom of the page, enable the option that says 'Allow Apps That Use Less Secure Sign In.' (Leave this page up, as you will need to come back to it for the last step)

3) Create a new yahoo mail account on your phone

settings

  • accounts & passwords
    • add account
      • yahoo (follow the step by step instructions)

4) Your yahoo mail should now be working normally through your apple mail app on your iphone, however I would send a test email to yourself just to make sure

5) Finally, go back to your computer to the Yahoo Account Security page that you previously left open, and this time, DISABLE the option that says 'Allow Apps That Use Less Secure Sign In.'

If done correctly, these steps will fix the problem, while not compromising your security. The biggest issue is the Yahoo Account Key.

Here is what yahoo help says: Can't send or receive Yahoo email in a third-party app

This means there's something wrong with the app. You can download the Yahoo Mail app from the app store and use that instead or do any of the following:

Apps with outdated security now require you grant them access in Yahoo Mail.

Delete Yahoo Mail from the app and re-add it. Steps for mobile:

  • Android Mail - Remove and re-add your account.
  • iOS Mail - Remove your account then re-add your account.

Contact your app manufacturer for additional troubleshooting options.

When I went thru the delate/add process in Apple App - it made me go thru the Access key step. I have an account key - that I had just setup a day ago - maybe that forces me down the Access Key path. Nonetheless the Yahoo help clearly says "now require you grant them access" - this simply means Access key.

Everybody to their own opinion and interpretation.

I am on the lated 11.2.5 on my iPhone 7 and the problem is still there

  • Inbox does not update even if I pull it down to refresh. last emails show from Sunday, today is tuesday and I can see from a browser I have a bunch of emails since then.
  • If I kill the mail app nothing happens
  • If I turn of/on my iPhone nothing happens
  • If I switch wifi offnothing happens
  • If I switch mobile off nothing happens
  • If I switch to airplane mode and back nothing happens

The only way to make it works is to either Hard shut down the phone (holding power and vol down) or removing the account and adding it again.

Also downloading the Yahoo mail app fixes it but I don't want to use that.
