Import Multi-Disc CD as One Album

I'm brand new here and just tried importing my 2-disc CD of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" into iTunes to synch with my iPod (30 GB) using the latest iTune 7.0.2 software. How do I make the 2-disc album show up as only one album in iTunes and on my iPod instead of two separate entries (The Wall[Disc 1] and The Wall [Disc 2])? I'm going to have to figure this one out since I have a lot of multi-disc sets to scan.
Thanks,
garwar

I think Damon has misunderstood your post. You want 2 discs to show as one, correct?

Importing multi disc sets into iTunes as one disc means that you'll need to edit the album info to show it as one disc. I usually import the separate CDs first, then edit them into one album afterwards.

First, highlight all the songs from these CDs in iTunes, right click on them and select "get info" This brings up the "multiple item info window". Now go to the "album name" field and retype the album name to one that suits and this rids the "disc 1, disc 2" info that you do not need.

Then you'll need to renumber all the tracks. Start with the first disc and in the "track number field" start with "1 of *, (* being the total number of tracks on all discs). Do this on all the discs in the set. When you've done the first disc, carry on sequentially with the numbers.

Now, in the "disc number" field you 'll need to enter "1 of 1" to ensure that iTunes reads all discs as just one.

I would also make sure that other info like "artist", "genre" and "year" are the same.

When you're done, click "ok" and all the discs should be read as one. If they aren't, then go back and check everything that you've altered.

You must renumber the tracks.

For instance, Pink FLoyd's "The Wall" contains 2 discs each of 13 tracks.

If you don't renumber them, you will get "Hey You" (the first track on the second cd) played first, followed by "In The Flesh" (the first track on the first cd) played second. This is because if you do not renumber them, both tracks will be shown as "1 of 13" and iTunes (and the iPod) will play "Hey You" first because the tracks will played in alphabetical order. You'll get "Vera" played as track 8 when if you want the set as one disc it should be track 17.

Similarly, it will show "Goodbye Cruel World" as the second to last track in the whole list of 26 tracks when it should be played as track 13.

So, to the original poster, you do need to renumber the tracks or they will be played out of sequence.

Sorry to say, but your wrong.

If the Disk Number info is correct you can have two Track Numbers that are the same.

Go to the music store to see how it should be done...

Do a 'Get info' on "In the Flesh?" and you will see that it is track 1 on disk 1.

Then do a 'Get Info' for the song "Hey You" and you will see that it is track 1 on disk 2 which means it's the 14th song on the album.

Ok, I think we are at cross purposes here.

Your method does work as long as you mark the disc number field as 1 of 1 and 1 of 2, right? Have I got that correct?

For my part, I prefer to renumber both discs so that it reads as one, so I choose 1 of 1 for both discs. This puts the tracks out of order (as I previously mentioned) so I have to renumber the tracks accordingly as 1 of 26, 2 of 26, etc.

This is how I prefer to do it.

Maybe that's where we differ?

Thanks for pointing that out though, I wasn't aware it would work like that.

I think its an issue of semantics.

If you want "The Wall" to show as one album, then you should use the method Rebus explained. This will ensure that all tracks of "The Wall" show up in order seperated first by disc, then by track. This is the "correct" method of tagging multi-disc albums.

If you want "The Wall" to be one disc for personal or whichever reasons, then you should follow Jeff Bryan's method.

For purposes of showing up in iTunes or on an iPod, either method will appear the same. It basically just comes down to preference of the "cleanliness" of how you like your tagging system. Rebus' method is "cleaner."

not just cleaner but a lot easier as well...

"The Wall" is a simple 'album' to do via Jeff Bryan's method but if you are dealing with a box set it's a real pain in the you know what!

Imagine renumbering a box set that has 5 discs of 10 to 15 songs each...

Look at TV's Greatest Hits box set for example (it's not on the music store)... that's 7 disks with 65 songs on each disk! You would have to re-number 390 songs out of 455 or you could re-number 7 disks and be done with it.

One last post and then I'm done with this thread.

Exactly. But the OP specifically asked how to make "The Wall" into one album, so I gave him my preferred method. He didn't ask how make a 7 disc set into one album, and quite frankly, if I had that set you refer to I would be leaving it as a 7 disc set.

My advice was based on a two disc set like "The Wall".

Your method works, my method works. Neither is "correct", just different.
