8 cm disks

Does the Macbook super drive support the smaller 8 cm DVD disks - such as those used in the Sony Handycams?

If you use a disc that is smaller than the size of a normal CD or DVD, you could run into serious problems. Because the disc drive of a macbook is a slot loading drive, you could run into problems trying to get the disc out of your drive because the disc is smaller; the disc may become lodged in your computer. This could result in damaging your drive. Also, the applecare warranty does not cover damages due to using a minidisc in your drive. Additionally, because the disc is smaller, the computer may not read the information from the disc.

Here's a thread that has more information about what you may be referring to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1206431&#1206431

For your information, here's a link to the warranty information about using non-standard sized discs:

It says that some slot loading drives can accept 8 cm discs, but personally, I wouldn't take the chance. I'd look into buying an external disc player, so you don't have to risk ruining your macbook. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I am the idiot who put a smaller disk into the drive.
I scoured my instruction book beforehand and there is not a single refrence to the fact that you shouldn't.
Have I totally stuffed the computer?
Why won't they support the repair if they do not make it explicit that you shouldn't? I know that I may wll be an idiot, but idiots still need to be catered for in instruction manuals.

I'm really stressed out about this... is it in there forever? What can do?

Actually, page 69 of the User Guide ( http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inchUsersGuide.pdf) says:

"Important: The optical drive on your MacBook supports standard circular 12 cm discs. Irregularly shaped discs or discs smaller than 12 cm are not supported. These types of discs can become lodged in the drive."

I would contact apple or take your mac down to your local apple store and see if they can get it out for you. There maybe a charge for it since apple have stated that smaller disc are not supported. Other then that, you can buy an external dvd player/burner to use with your mac and just leave the internal drive stuck as it is.
