I locked a Pages document and forgot my password. Any way to recover it?

A few years ago I wrote a document and put a password on it. I do not remember my password and the hint was not helpful at all. I really need to get into that document now and want to know if there is any way I can. I would prefer to not download anything but if thats the only way then what's the best (free) software to use. Or, is there any way I can use terminal to unlock it? Why is there no "forgot my password" option 😢... I really need this document.

Hi There!

This sounds very frustrating. Have you tried Opening Utilities, Keychain Access, then under Category click on Passwords? Look for Password.pages. click on it and it should bring up the Attributes/access control. Click SHOW PASSWORD box. Enter your System Password that you use to log on the the machine and it should show you the password.

Best of luck Descoteaux.

I am not seeing Password.pages. Rather, I see separate pages document names in the Keychain Password category. One can select an individual pages file, right-click, and choose Get Info. This will pop a Keychain Attributes panel for the document, and at the bottom, is a box: Show password. When you click that Show password box, you will get a challenge:

User uploaded file

Enter your login password, click Allow, and you will be taken back to the previous Attributes panel with the document password displayed.
