ios 11 music

Since updating to iOS 11, my Music app is showing (and playing) songs that I do not have loaded onto the phone. Looking through the Music app the songs have a little download cloud icon. It seems to still be playing the songs even though they are not on the phone. I do not want this. I only want to play songs that are on my phone.

Where is the setting to change that? I've looked everything in the app and in Settings. I should add that I am not signed up for Apple Music, so it is not turned on.

Thank you.

Good evening zim_the_invader,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

If you are only wanting to see music that resides on your iPhone, try these steps:

  1. Open the Music app
  2. Tap the Library tab in the lower-left corner
  3. The list of categories in the Library appear in red, starting with Playlists.
  4. Scroll down to the last category on the list and tap on Downloaded Music
  5. There should be a grey bar at the top of the screen stating "Showing only music on this iPhone."

iPhone User Guide - Library

Library

The Library tab includes any added or downloaded music from Apple Music, music and music videos synced to iPhone, TV shows and movies you added from Apple Music, and iTunes purchases.

User uploaded file

Browse and play your music. Tap a category, such as Playlists or Albums, tap the album art, then tap User uploaded file.Tap User uploaded file to shuffle the playlist or album. Tap the player to show the Now Playing screen.

3D Touch. Press the album art, then tap User uploaded file. See 3D Touch.

Sort your music. Tap Playlists, Albums, or Songs, then tap Sort.

View more categories. In the Library tab, tap Edit, then select additional categories.

View only music stored on iPhone. In the Library tab, tap Downloaded Music.

Play music shared on a nearby computer. If a computer on your network shares music through iTunes Home Sharing, go to Settings > Music, then tap Sign In under Home Sharing. Return to the Music app, tap the Library tab, tap Home Sharing, then choose a shared library.

Remove Apple Music songs from iPhone. Go to Settings > Music, then turn off iCloud Music Library. The songs are removed from iPhone, but remain in iCloud. Music you purchased or synced also remains.

Take care.

This started with iOS 10 and the addition of apple music. There is no way to get this functionality back. Unless you navigate every time you want to start playing music to the show downloaded music and start play from here there is no way to prevent iOS from trying to play every song in your library. The only work around I have found and it a pain is to sign out of the itunes store on your phone, then it will only play/show songs on your device. Of course anytime you need to download updates or install new app you have to sign back in. The solution to just go downloaded songs and play there is useless unless you only start playing songs from your touch screen on the phone. If you use any bluetooth device or even the apple headset and press play, it knows nothing about the downloaded selection on the music app and will start streaming your entire library.

Same issue here. Apple seems intent on cramming things down your throat (in your ears?) and being in control of your music library. I want what I decide, and nothing else (not one, single other thing) to be put on my phone.

I don't want to stream, I don't need a curator, I don't want my files replaced, renamed or otherwise corrupted. Just let me play my music on the device I own. How hard is this to grasp?

I'll be watching and hoping someone has a fix. I've not been able to come up with one.

Yes, Apple Music destroyed my (rather massive) personal music library and cost me years of work, so it’s not a surprise that it’s still casting a shadow on what used to be a usable, graceful and dependable music player. I wish they would at least offer a stripped down “no relation to Apple Music” audio file player. I know a couple of good app developers that told me Apple wont let them create a stand alone 3rd party player either. You can make any sort of GUI you want but it can only access the iTunes library, so it won’t address any root level issues. There’s no option to use another player instead of the Music app on your phone.

Good suggestion about bout signing out on the phone though, thank you. That will disable app updates and purchases also, which is a pain, but I’m going to try it see how It goes.

Thanks again!

I agree. Everything is shot. I read one Apple response that said go to downloaded music and click on playlists. All it does is ask me to create one. All of mine seem to be gone. All is OK on the regular macs. Just iOS is screwed up. I also put all of the music on the cloud and paid extra for that. I can't access any of that with the awful new music app. I can get it on my old iPad with an old iOS.
