Dock icons disappear?

Open the Application whose Icon you wish to keep in the Dock permanently.

Control-Click the Dock Icon and choose:

Options > Keep in Dock

You can also re-arrange those Icons to suit your working style, by carefully dragging an icon to a different position. If done properly, other icons will "get out of the way" to make a place to drop the Icon in question. [you cannot place Apps to the right of the divider, or Folders/files to the left of the divider.]

This issue is due to the League of Legends (LOL) client on macOS. It's been occurring for nearly a year and Riot, Inc. has not yet fixed it. There is no way to fix the icon-disappearing phenomenon without permanently uninstalling the LOL client and rebooting the computer.

Same problem here on a MacBook Pro 15 2015.

Happens to me with a clean install (i.e. not upgrade) as well.

It's disappointing that a clean install of a stable version of OS has this.

Reset Launchpad

Step #1. Starting off, click on the desktop.

Step #2. Next, you need to click on the Go menu located on the menu bar.

Step #3. Now, press and hold the Option key ⌥. Then, click on Library.

Step #4. Next, you have to double click on the Application Support folder.

Step #5. Double click on the Dock folder.

Then, you need to drag all files ending in .db into the trash.

Step #6. Click on the Apple icon at the top left the corner of the screen → Finally, you need to click on Restart → Restart button.

Use Default Locations for Applications

Launchpad shows the apps which are in the default Applications folder. In case the program is not there, it won't show up in Launchpad. In this case, move the app out of the folder, log out and log back in to restart Launchpad. Now, move the program back to the Applications folder.

7. Reboot the Mac.

That is correct.

However, I found this happens after I installed/updated the League of Legends macOS client.

This may be on their end.

I have put a support request with them as well.

The issue has to do with the icons of the applications.

Not only in the dock, but also if you CMD+tab -- the icons are missing and only the "default" ones are shown.

The applications are already in the dock.

Removing and adding them back doesn't solve the problem.

I got three replies; only the last one sort of making progress towards debugging the issue.

Actually I don't have LoL installed as of now, as icons disappearing freak me out.

But now that you posted here, I'll install it and continue bugging them to sort this out :-)

Its not a problem with Riot. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro 13 with Touch Bar and I have the exact same issue. Many different apps do this for me. Safari, Face-Time, FireFox, Spotify, Mail, and iTunes do the same thing. I have restarted the computer and nothing has worked.

Allow me to test my understanding:

Your complaint is not that these Icons literally disappear to nothing, but that they change into generic Icons.

¿is that right?

Any reply from Riot Games? I noticed that this happens after the authorization of client icon change. Probably their code to update the client icon is damaging the OS.
