High Sierra: OSInstall.mpkg missing or damaged

Macbook Air mid-2012, updating from Sierra. 75GB free of 256GB SSD space. Also 128GB JetDrive installed at the time, but no other external hardware.

Part-way into install, it failed with "macOS could not be installed in your computer". I missed the original error message (which I think was different) but subsequently selecting [Restart] stops at a similar point with the message "The path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again." Restarting repeatedly just gets back to the same message after a few minutes. The computer is no longer usable.

Some sources on the web suggested using "find" from a recovery terminal to locate the OSInstall.mpkg file, but in my case this file is not found.

Eventually I ad to do a full restore from TimeMachine to get back to a working Sierra. Back up again at 2:30am.

Grateful for any suggestions on what to try next...

I noticed the installer on the AppStore was updated on 5th October, after my original failed attempt to install High Sierra. It doesn't say why it has been updated. I downloaded the new one and tried again and this time it worked. Nothing else was different.

Same problem. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Seems to be older machines with less hard drive space. I have a 500 gig drive and probably about not as much free space as I needed. I couldn’t restore from time machine either as it had problems with the hard drive (even though disk utility then found nothing wrong several times). I’ve now installed a clean copy of High Sierra and hope to restore once I have a system up and running.

So glad I have a Time Capsule (not that I’m counting my chickens just yet).

Click on the popup window and you will see some options at the top of your screen. you can exit the Mac OS Installer Program. Optionally you can power off and hold down the option key while powering back on. You will see the Mac OS Installer and your boot disk Macintosh HD. Select Macintosh HD and boot. This might get you going again and allow you to run a back up. I have not figured out how to remove the Mac OS Installer yet. Hope this is helpful.

I have the same problem on a Macmini 2010. Always update so going from latest OS to this one and have the “missing file” error, restart bring me back to the same place. So how do I get out of this?

People say download, but if you can not get into your computer, how do you download anything..... can I get into my computer without the he update finishing?

please help

Thanks. I'm having the same problem (mid 2013 macbook air) and followed your "optional" piece of advice, which got me back in so that I could at least do a time machine back up of my computer. then scheduled a genius bar appointment tomorrow to just have them handle it. If I learn anything helpful, I'll share here.

I shut down the computer. And when restarting held down the options/alt button. That pulled up two options, I opened the Macintosh HD and that did the trick. It got me past the error screen. From there I backed up my computer the regular way.

My post was a reply to a user who provided the instructions I followed. So read the post before mine, too. Hope it works for you.

I got the same problem.

My solution is to restart computer by pressing Cmd + R to access to recovery mode. I chose first option Backup from disk. I chose my last backup which is at time of update MacOS. I use this image to recover and continue my update.

It worked well for my computer. I finally got a successful update !!!

I hope that can help you and someone else.

Hi michail_d just fixed this myself today. Start up MacBook Air whilst pressing the R key. Hold this till the Apple logo appears. It may take some time to start.

On the menu select to install HighSierra. Be prepared to give up a good part of your time but this will eventually take you to Login Screen

Best of luck

I just ran into the same problem with my MacBook Pro with Retina Display and Touch-bar. I am unaware if it was updating the OS or not, but on startup it just sat there with the password screen up, keyboard and mouse locked, and the circle of death. After an hour wait with no changes, I manually shut it down and rebooted, whereupon I got the same error message. Any help out there?

Ok. After reading someone else’s response, I pressed Command-R on restart. That got me to a menu where I could backup from Time Machine, reinstall the OS or a couple of other options. I chose the option to reinstall the OS. Everything worked fine, but it took quite a while (45 min?), but I’m sure it was less than if I had tried to use one of my Time Machine backups. Everything thing seems to be working fine again.

Hmmm. I wonder why your keyboard doesn’t work? Have you reinstalled the OS? Does your trackpad work? Do you have a mouse or keyboard you could plug-in? Is your computer searching for a Bluetooth connection?

Looking around the internet I see that others have had this problem at startup. Try pressing the control-option-p-r keys at startup. There are a few other things we can try.

This fixed it for me....

When you’re on the installer screen with the error message you listed, click the top of the screen to reveal the (hidden) OSX top bar. Then go to “startup disk” and choose your hard drive. In my case, the only option. Then click reboot. In my case, this resulted in a regular boot.
