Epub file not converting in KindlePreviewer

Hello everyone.

I have run into an issue that has me stumped, and I don't know if it's a Pages problem or KindleGen.

I am trying to create a mobi file from an epub file that I have exported from Apple Pages. Kindle Previewer generated the file with a screwed up TOC, and it is not displaying the pages properly - starting 3/4 of the way through the book, rather than at the beginning.

I've posted this same problem on Amazon's support forum and am waiting for an answer.

Get Calibre 3.8, and open a copy of your Pages 5.6.2 generated ePub3 book. In Calibre, select your ePub, and click the Convert (individual) button on the Toolbar. On the following screen, the left is ePub, and on the right is .mobi. Let it rip, and see how it looks in a Kindle viewer.

Other than .pages document formatting beforehand, you have zero control over what Pages v5.6.2 adds, subtracts, or mutilates in your exported ePub. Does Kindlegen accept Word .docx documents, or PDF as direct input?

I generated an ePub from Pages v5.6.2. With the just downloaded Calibre 3.8, I right-clicked on the Desktop ePub file, and the Finder's secondary menu's Open With ▸ offered Calibre 3.8. It opened the ePub without issue. I selected the ePub within Calibre, and chose Convert (individual), setting the source to ePub, and the destination to .mobi.

When the conversion was done, I clicked on the .mobi in the Calibre 3.8 right panel, and Calibre opened it in its own viewer. You might still want to open this in an external Kindle, or Kindle viewer.

Apparently, Kindle Direct Publishing supports Word .docx documents.

It might be worthwhile to revisit the paragraph styles that you have checked to appear in the ToC within Pages v5.6.2. Is Title unchecked? 😉

I just generated a ToC in Pages v5.6.2 with a Title in it. Exported to ePub. Title was viewable in Calibre's ePub viewer, or iBooks.

The problem with exporting a Table of Contents is that what looks like:

Title ...................... 1 in Pages v5.6.2,

becomes

Title 1 in the ePub. This is a single string, not two distinct items. Thus, one cannot customize the ePub ToC by acting on text and page number separately.

Hello VikingOSX.

Thanks! I was about to do that when I read on a review page that you can't open epub files in Calibre - they have to be html files, and Pages can't export html (at least I haven't found a way).

I think that Kindle may only accept epub files...not 100% sure though.

I will try Calibre anyway. Perhaps they've updated their options.

Okay - I actually created the mobi file! It turned out better than KindleGen's version, but the TOC is still not right. It's missing all of the titles from the first chapter.

Oh well. Will keep trying to figure out what's going on.

Thanks. No, title is checked. I even tried deleting the entire TOC and recreating it. No luck. 😟
