how durable is the crystal on the series 3 apple watch?

No Apple Watch has a shatterproof or scratch proof screen / crystal.
Aluminium models have Ion-X glass. These models are lighter in weight than stainless steel models of the same case size.
Stainless steel and ceramic / Edition watches have a sapphire crystal, which is more scratch resistant than Ion-X glass.

I purchased an Apple Watch 3 on 12/17. Gave it to my wife as a gift on 12/25 and the screen face glass was shattered on 12/28. We suspect it cracked (actually popped is a better description) partially due to the extreme cold temperature outside at the time (0 degrees Fahrenheit). It's a beautiful watch and works amazingly but in my opinion that saphire glass is a bit too brittle for a watch.

Thank you. I understand. I'm in to heavy workouts and runs and I normally use a Garmin. I'm just trying to get a feel for how durable the Apple Watch is and if anyone feels they crack easy
